Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Wow a fine price. Suggested a very similar one to someone on saveonlaptops. that was going for close to €700.

What's the resolution of the screen?

    1366x768

Says it in the second half of the top review. Are you blind or something?

That's one ugly chunk of black plastic. A throwback to laptops of the early 90s. Yeuch!

    What does "hybrid" mean?

I thought it meant the screen detaches to form a tablet, but there's no mention of that in the link.

It's a hybrid hard drive. It's like a regular hard disc drive but with a low-capacity solid state drive component to let it access the most-used data faster.

    And without trying.. :)

For that spec, at that price I don't think I'd care if it was made out of lego.
It's not an amazingly-excellent-unbelievable price, but it is hard to beat.

Just to note, as far as I can tell this comes with no OS (well, it does - FreeDOS). Which is part of why it's so cheap - Windows Home still costs 40-50 quid to an OEM.

So unless you've got a usable copy of Windows or are going to use a free OS there's not much point. If you always use a free OS its a decent way to avoid handing Microsoft money though.

Linux Mint is an excellent distribution these days:

Lets say you didn't mind giving microosft money... is it a bargain? Need a new laptop and want a bit of grunt with it. Is the power to Euro ratio good or can someone advise something better?

  • Registered Users Posts: 161 ✭✭sdowling04

I bought the G500 off a German seller on Ebay for 610 in Jan(mine one with a 3rd gen processor instead of a 4th and 8gb instead of 4gb RAM, same thing apart from that)...Its a fantastic quad core laptop for the price. I stuck windows 8.1 on it and Im really impressed with it. I might pick up a full SSD as I'm going to America in a week and a half.

Seems decent to me. Check how repairs are handled under warranty.

High end hard-ware at a very reasonable price.

Note- the BIOS on these has a white list of supported hard-ware- for example if you swap out the Atheros wireless card for a dual band one- you may encounter issues- ditto the BT module, and some of the other removable components (including the hard-drive- the white list has a list of supported chipsets).

Also- seriously advise you get the 8Gb of RAM (or whatever maxes this out)- if you're going to invest in an i7, with a highbred hard-drive, presumably you have a need for the horsepower (other than holding a pissing contest with your mates).

"aka" is short for also-known-as. What you want is "i.e.".

I'd of canceled my pcspecialist.co.uk laptop order for this if it had a 1080p screen. I hate 1366x768 displays.

Someone who's gonna buy a high spec i7 laptop with a hybrid drive isn't gonna be bothered at the fact it hasn't got an OS are they? It's not a laptop for da mammy doing her Internet banking.

I would advise anyone thinking of getting one of these to go to PC World and have a look at it. It is the opposite of slim.

Guarantee you there'd be at least one whimper on here - I'm amazed there aren't any in the Amazon comments; Germans must actually read specs properly!

    They do tend to.

With this laptop- you're getting an i7 over an i5, alongside discrete graphics, for a 30 quid premium- which is nuts. You are not going to beat these specs, at this price point.

As alluded to above- this is a powerful laptop. It is not a fashion accessory- it is a little bulky- its not a Macbook Air (or similar). You are not paying for aesthetics- you are paying for a very competent laptop, with good horsepower, that is more than capable of most things you can throw at it. If you are just looking at something for browsing the internet with, and perhaps a little Office work- then this is obviously overkill.

If you're more concerned about looks, than the power of the thing- go get something else. This isn't a toy.

To be serious and a bit off topic here....why is Apple stuff so pricey? Is it all a elitist thing or is the price reflected in the user experience?

Apple seem to think their products need a premium price when really your getting low spec for double the price of a Windows pc.

Second biggest online retailer in the US now after Amazon...had to think about that for a sec the other day when i read it....like HOW. They dont have that much of a range.

Compare spec of iphone5 against ehhh Moto G fo example, their isint all that much in it spec wise, but their's €400+(?) dif in the price.

I honestly think less of someone that buys any of their massively overpriced sh1te.

Nothing but look at me brand whor3s. Gobsh1tes.

It's an amazing spec for the price. i7 and respectable graphics - could play any modern games on that 8750.

Here is the gpu benchmark, very good for the price http://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-Radeon-HD-8750M.87147.0.html

Bmm, i think your looking at the wrong laptop, this is a budget power user machine, you seem to expect an ultrabook style machine, not possible with this spec and price.

So.... still skulking around this...... If you buy it, you'd have to buy Windows 7 (if you wanted) and a new UK keyboard, assuming the German version would be a pain to get used to. http://www.amazon.co.uk/IBM-Lenovo-G500-G505-G510/dp/B00HQG9S4A . SO all in, about €675 for it.
    Still a good deal?

I would love the same spec in a nice slim chassis but not at this money..... any takers yet?

I have it, don't need the UK keyboard, but if you did, could buy the silicone cover if you wanted. (Both are linked in the OP).

Windows 7 can be got for ~£45 or Less if you look around. (E.G Here or Here)

You could try out Mint, Ubuntu or Zorin first, and see if you like/dislike them.

    :D

Sorry didn't read it, I was more posting to show there is one.

There is one that is well made, But I didn't see it in UK/Ireland Layout. I didn't look very hard TBH.

Maybe something like this - Keyboard Cover
Also, If you did want to install an Irish keyboard, you may find one cheaper than the one I linked to.

If you're going to install Windows 8, would it not be easier to just buy directly from Lenovo here for €670? At least then you'd have the UK keyboard, 2Gb extra RAM and a lot less hassle with returns and warranty if anything goes wrong with it? You'd only save about €20 buying from the OP's link.
