Any quotes for this week ?
Went with lambs last night and more for tomorrow at 4.80.Seems to be the tops at the moment around here(south east).Maybe more going but haven't heard of anyone getting anything better recently.
Factories seem to be getting more than enough supplies at the moment and every time you ring all they are looking to do is to pull the price a bit.

Sold a few of the runts that wouldn't put on weight in the mart this morning. 80 euro for 36
    .5 kilos which isn't bad I think.

any prices? heard from a neighbour that supplies are tightening

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,779 ✭✭✭paddysdream

Tops seems to be 4.75 with a few on 4.70.Thats QA inclusive.Hear ICM are supposedly only paying 4.50 for anything that kills in excess of 25kgs.
Lambs seem to be getting scarcer but thats only natural this time of year.Any dear store lambs bought this year are a poor paying proposition at those prices.
Heavy lambs a poor enough trade in the marts around here.Buyers seem reluctant to pass much with 100 per head.

That's a poor show giving the way sterling has gone plus hoggets have got to be getting tighter. Larry's take on the trade too...haven't heard of a cut for over weight sheep in a while.

Lots of complaints about overweight lambs in the last few weeks from a few factories.Anyone can have a few in a bunch esp. if you are trying to get full weight. But killing lambs averaging 25 plus kgs is not doing anyone any good.Producer is loosing money putting on surplus weight with no price increase and processor left with unsuitable carcasses.
Agree though the price is a poor start(end) to the year.Doesn't say a lot for the prospect of a good price for spring lamb as the hogget carryover now seems to drag onto May the last few years.

Is there a lot of lambs going to come on the market in a flush from lads grazing rape?

With no live export and the outrageous demise of the butchers there's only one buyer.

Very poor lambs around too, some lambs were just put to grass and have graduated from being 38kg store lambs to being 50kg stores, I really can't see any hope for some lambs I've seen going into lairage.
ICM were saying they can handle a small percentage overweight or short of flesh , but not what's being presented

Very hard to put up to €20 of meal into a lamb and have it finished right, just to be rewarded with €4-70 a kilo.

I only got 99 euro for some lambs weighing 52.5kg only on grass. That was last Saturday. Should be getting more this time of year.

I read the icsa did a protest at low lamb prices in icm today. Well done for someone trying to do something about the disappointing prices .

As you know I did plenty of it, but standing at a factory gate is a waste of time......

They are on the up...heard 4.80...mart manager in the south East rang me looking for heavy hoggets this morning says he has two new customers at the ring

  • Registered Users Posts: 645 ✭✭✭MD1983

    4.70 from kildare to 22.5kg

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,497 ✭✭✭rangler1

At an IFA meeting last night, 4.80 seemed to be the run of it with some getting to 23.5.
Heard of a 500 inlamb ewe sale coming up and 1000 ewe farm converting to dairy, and that's only locally.
    Sheep might come good yet

Maybe that auld protest did some good !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

On a more serious note although any rise in price is welcome, feeding lambs for 4.80 a kilo at this time of year is a waste of time and money.Bad enough with your own lambs but it will put a good few off store lamb buying for the coming year.
Regarding cuts for very heavy lambs, had 2 in a bunch of stragglers last week (25.6kg,26.1kg,both ram lambs that never fleshed up despite being on ad lib) and wasn't cut.To be fair the rest averaged 21.9 with very little variation.
Think its "supposed" to be a new Northern buyer coming to a local mart looking for lambs 48 to 55kg.They were hard pressed to make much with 100 the last 2 weeks so today will tell a tale

Have a batch going to a butcher locally again this week. Happy to get some well needed money in, but know I'm a busy fool turning lambs out for €4-80 a kilo that are stuffed with meal. Here's hoping the Easter market helps to rebalance the books .

The Easter market is outdated teagasc bull****.. Consumer couldn't tell new season lamb from hogget and supermarkets want it for nothing for promotion .. Look to the Muslims festivals for increased demand lads!

Factories are switching over to spring lamb later and later every year.Hoggets are being killed into May the last few years and factories will not switch over to lamb until supplies are strong enough.
Maybe a market for a few early in the year but the demand has gone in the last few years.
Why try selling lamb at maybe 1 to 1.50 a kilo extra(to the farmer!!)when hogget can be bought cheaper. There seems to be no distinction between lamb and hogget any more.
Hard to see a big demand for early lamb which probably needs 7 a kilo to pay when last years can be bought at less than a fiver a kilo.

Truth be known, the late born and then spring fattened hogget is a superior product. Leaner more flavoursome and provided it gets a week to hang it is plenty tender. Forced early lamb tastes of nothing, pale opaqe fatty little chops..
