I'm thinking of buying a couple of water butts to collect rain water and then pump it to a storage tank in the attic and use it for flushing toilets. Is this practical and if so what kind of pump do I need.

Are you just going to use it for flushing toilets? A pump like this would be sufficient if only using it for toilets. Just filter the water going to the tanks.
