I had to rent a car for 5 days last month. As my car was in the garaged being fixed after a faulty party had been replaced, a car was rented for me by the garage.

It was agreed that I would transfer my own insurance over to the rented car for the period. (first mistake)

On way back to Dublin on the M7 a huge stone was kicked up from car in front. It hit the bonnet of the rented car and cause a 2 inch scrape and small dent.

I requested a quote from a specialised car repair garage who quoted €250 to repair dent and respray bonnet.

However the Car Hire company want €530 to fix this based on their own assessors report. There is such a huge discrepancy between my quote and theirs that I am been ripped off.

They are refusing to negotiate and have given me 3 days before they contact my insurance company. I have an excess on my insurance, of €350 , so all the insurance company will pay towards it is €180 ( I assume)

Is this sort of behavior typical of car hire companies?? A law into themselves.

Put it to your insurance company and if the estimate is padded, they will sort it out. You have the option to repay your insurers to reinstate your Bonus at the end of the process

Let your insurance company deal with it. Advise them when you report the claim that you have a quotation yourself and you are aware you are being ripped off. One of their inhouse assrs should be able to get their estimate down. Pay them back what they pay out and your no claims wont be effected. Best way round this in my opinion.
    Good luck :)
