As of 1 January 2014 motor vehicle tax is not payable on cars that are at least 40 years old. A reduced rate applies to petrol cars between 26 and 40 years old. The exemption for diesel and LPG cars less than 40 years old has been withdrawn.

We're usually first in Europe for this kind of thing so I'd say it's only a matter of time unfortunately and as more reliable machinery starts to hit 30 years of age the more noticeable the it will become to the powers that be. A lot of late 80's cars are more than capable of being used as DD while being , economical, reliable and comfortable. Jap stuff especially IMO.

    That article is from 2012!

But here's a link suggesting that actual new provisions are having a bad effect:
    http://www.dutchnews.nl/news/archives/2014/01/classic_car_exports_rise_as_ro.php

Here's a PDF with the actual provisions:

25% for 25-40 yrs old. AND you can't drive in January, February or December!

In their defence, the Dutch have more to fear from Global Warming. :D

Impact of a small country like Holland on emissions is miniscule.

A case of the boy with his finger in the dyke perhaps!

I assume he means that as most of Holland is under sea level, they would be affected more than most countries by rising water levels, rather than pollution being produced by the country itself.

You're both right (though I was referring to the sea level!)

The Dutch really don't want sea water rises, but taxing old cars as a "green" policy is like sticking your finger in a crumbing dyke. And isn't there a school of thought that suggests the environmental cost of building a new car is worse than any extra emissions an oldtimer produces?

Indeed and who remembers the survey that found that a Prius is more polluting than a Hummer over its lifetime?

Would the air be very still there in winter ?

I have to admit: there are a lot of classic car owners who are abusing the system by driving a rusty Mercedes-diesel which smells terribly, but owners of a nice P1800 or PV 544
