Movie Director John Carpenter is in my opinion one of the coolest people out there. He has directed some great movies in his time and has written some of the greatest movie scores ever.

I think I should be voted no.1 coolest.

In fact I think I should be voted first and second coolest in case one of them doesn't work.

    These lyrics;

    I feel so extraordinary
Something's got a hold on me
I get this feeling I'm in motion
    A sudden sense of liberty
    I don't care 'cause I'm not there
And I don't care if I'm here tomorrow
Again and again I've taken too much
Of the things that cost you too much

I used to think that the day would never come
I'd see delight in the shade of the morning sun
My morning sun is the drug that brings me near
To the childhood I lost, replaced by fear
I used to think that the day would never come
That my life would depend on the morning sun

Not sure if he'd want to be included on the thread. I'm pretty sure he is on record as saying he never aspired to be cool.

I think "nature" is cool, like the birds singing, the green leaves on the tree's, the bumblebee's buzzing away doing their thing, the smell of cut grass, the sun shining, a drink of pure virgin water from a mountain stream.

...pretty awesome and cool, is nature.

I was going to post 'bono on Jesus' last night. I thought better of it when I realised people might take me seriously on either. Went with vanilla ice instead.

The Beach boys, They may have invented "being cool"

I like the Beach Boys but they are one of the most uncool bands ever. I mean how can they possibly be cool when they have Mike Love in the band and recorded a song called Be True To Your School?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,332 ✭✭✭✭Cienciano

Ah here, some stuff here shouldn't be mentioned in a thread about cool. Harley Davidsons are the least cool bike you can own unless it's a vintage customised beyond recognition.

Ah here, he was a good front man, but he's not exactly cool.

    Freddie Mercury = Not cool
    Nick Cave = Cool

    Eric Clapton = Not cool
    Jimi Hendrix = Cool

    Queen = Not cool
    The Clash = Cool

    The Beach Boys = Uncool
    The Doors = Cool

Evanesence = About as cool as Hanson's mmmbop
    Velvet Underground = Cool

    Beastie Boys = Cool
    Johnny Depp = Not cool

Liking or respecting something doesn't make them cool. I prefer The Beatles to the Rolling Stones, but the Stones are definitely cooler.
    I'm the cool police btw.
    Dave Grohl.
I don't like his music, but he's definitely cool.

    As yet unmentioned: Josh Homme

Coolest thing, or at least vehicle, ever has got to be the original Mini.

Nissan Skyline. Even the name is cool. Especially a black on black one.

    Dave Grohl.

I think people overrate Dave Grohl. He's funny and talented and all. But he's lesser Josh Homme imo.

I'd give Meatloaf a mention too. Going from Bat Outta Hell to Fight Club is a pretty bad-ass career path

A lot of bands or artists I love have been mentioned that I definitely wouldn't call cool. For me you can't be cool if you fail any of the following criteria. (Regardless of how good they were)

You were seen as 'inauthentic' by your contemporaries (sorry Joe Strummer, Talking Heads and Debbie Harry)

You had long stages of your careers where you seemed to be spinning your wheels (really really sorry Dylan and Neil Young)

Some people think your fans are pretentious (Radiohead and Bjork)

You were rejected by punk (Glam rock, Eric Clapton, Pink Floyd)

Critical reception has been a problem for you. (Pearl Jam)

You're too 'classic' (The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Hendrix

You're so famous so that many people who aren't interested in music have heard of you but consider you old-fashioned. (Elvis, Frank Sinatra)

Too many of your fans are dull middle-aged men (Fleetwood Mac)

    For me cool is...

    Joy Division
    Leonard Cohen
    The Velvet Underground
    Ian Dury
    Iggy Pop
    The Ramones

    Joni Mitchell

    Levon Helm

Leonard Cohen (perhaps the very coolest).

    Jeff Buckley

    Gabriel Byrne

Keanu Reeves (Can't act for sh*t, but he looks cool as hell, and dances to his on tune in real life).

    Diane Keaton

Damn you , that was my one. I had one for about 6 months, primer grey, bashed to feck, enormous fun to be had. The new ones look okay but they lack the personality and presence.

    Others...(in my eyes anyway)

Austin Powers, James Bond, John Mcclane

    Faithless, Happy Mondays, ABBA

Finding Nemo, Star Wars, Pulp Fiction

    Converse, Parkas and Tatoos

The same criticism could be made of your choices though. Plenty of dull middle-aged men once rocked out to The Ramones for instance, while The Velvet Underground attract more than their fair share of pretentious poseur fans. Over a long career if you have more output that stands the test of time (not always easy to judge at the actual moment of creation) than stuff which most intelligent people want to forget then you can be considered cool in my book. Nobody's perfect & bands certainly can't help the kind of people that listen to them.

Nah. The 'rejected by punks' bit? Some punk was great. Some was ok. Most was shyte. Their rejection of the 'dinosaur' progressive bands was founded in either insecurity, posturing or simply playing-to-character. For instance, Johnny Rotten Lydon has repeatedly cited Van deGraaf generator as a favourite band. You really can't get lees punk than VdeGG!

Rejected by snotty spotty kids ? So what?

Didn't mean it as criticism, I love at least half the acts I mentioned, especially the ones labelled under pretentious, I just think there's a difference between being quality and being cool.

Inspiring everyone from Metallica to Rush to Nirvana over the decades, and Kanye West was sampling them 40+ years on:

    1969:

    2010:

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.
