Hey everyone, first post here! Was just wondering a few of us (possibly 3 or 4) are heading down the end of may to climb Carrantuohill. We were going to hire a cottage out but have decided just to camp out. Was wondering where would be a good spot to camp? Preferably on the beach, is there one nearby possible to camp on/light fires etc? And within a short drive of the mountain range? Hoping get a good weekend weather wise and cant wait to explore the area!

    Thanks in advance

    David

You can camp at cronins yard at the foot of the mountain. Also highly recommend mortimers campsite in cahirciveen but is a bit of a drive away.

it is kind of far from any beaches on Carrantuohill
Rossbeigh was wrecked by winter storms

kells bay has no camping near it

and there is not much nearby on the kenmare bay side

as Someone mentioned Cahersiveen would be a good bet.

Camp fires are not allowed on some beaches.

OP, the nearest beach to Killarney is probably Rossbeigh. Cahersiveen is more than 60k away; an hour long drive.

If you are looking for a campsite, there is one in Killarney; 'Flemings, White Bridge'.

You'd be better off camping somewhere closer to Killarney, or closer to The Devil's Ladder.

Go north east to South west, as in get to Cruach Mhor end first and then head across it and on to Cnoc na Peiste. You will be ascending slightly then, which is easier. You can stay on the ridge or follow a path that's a few metres below it, mostly to the north west side of ridge before the Big Gun, and then moving to the other side of the ridge thereafter. Take care, there was one fatality on the ridge last year.

You can descend via the Bone on Maolan Bui down to the Hags Glen or keep going, it's pretty fast across rest of Eastern Reeks if you fancy summit bagging and completing that side of the range. You can descend via the Zig Zags or Devils Ladder.

    http://www.croninsyard.com/

    All contact details there!!

Don't forget to try the home cooking (scones and cakes) in their small Café.

Wouldn't think that you could light fires anywhere around there. Firsts of all - it is private land and secondly the locals keep sheep and goats on it and the last thing they need is a gorse fire etc! Also - the main ethos for users is to leave the mountain as you find it.....

Didn't realise that it was possible to camp at Cronin's Yard. Handy to know.

Think a fire might push it. It's private farmland. We are relying on the toleration of the owners to enable us enjoy it.

Hi Conor, is the land on the other side, around Coomloughra Lough, private or public land? Do you know if camping is allowed around there? Thanks.

All private all around the Reeks. The only public land in the area is the National Park between Mangerton, down to the Lakes and up the Purple Mountains, but almost sure fires are banned there by the Rangers. Think the land on the Coomloughra side would be even "more" private, there are gates kept closed across the road up there. Think the best bet is to camp at Cronin's Yard with all the facilities, think camping around the rescue hut would also be okay and have also seen people camp by the lakes around there, but just think lighting a fire might draw attention.

Edit just realised you meant the coming weekend. Still not looking great. Hope this isn't the pattern for the summer (again)

Accuweather says there will be showers over the weekend in Killarney.

I see that the Cronin's Yard link says that they have fire pits, so if you camp there, you can have a fire, presumably.

Drop a line to Cronins Yard page on Facebook and presume they'll look out the window and tell you want it's like and what the forecast is for weekend there. Or Google the Mountain Forecast site, it's pretty good at working out the effect of altitude and wind on the conditions up high.
