No doubt it's an old wives tale but was told years ago of putting a few rats in a barrel, let them turn on each other and the one that survives will have a taste for other rats:eek:

The Stockholm rat weighed about a kilo (2.2lb), Mr Korsas believes. Despite regular media speculation, there appears to be little evidence of rats getting bigger in developed countries.
However, scientists do believe they could eventually grow into the size of sheep,

Where does one get a cannibal rat ?

I have been told that you get a barrell with a seesaw and bait, and trap rats in it, eventually one rat in the trap will eat the others, eventually you release him/her and that will will go out and eat all the others - in theory.

Anyone use ferrets? I would almost get one (neutered) and release it, but we have hens.

Best way of controling rats is with poision. Use plastic silage wrap hollow pipes. Thread blocks of bait through tying wire and then tie these through the hollow pipes. Rat will eat his fill and then go away and die, If you put them out in the autumn you will catch the rats as they enter the yard and they will return to the ditch/wall from where they came to die,

Do not leave blocks unsecured in pipes rats will carry them back to nests if rats do not get enough poision to kill themselves they can become immune. Grain bail left in pipes can become unpalatable when it gets wet. When you need another bucket of poision change active ingredients ( not just the brand).

When handling poision double glove, nitrile gloves inside heavy kitchen or chemical gloves. Wash gloves in soap and water after and dfispose of nitrile gloves, Store kitchen/chemical gloves in a container with poision bucket.

Cats and dogs will only kill limited amounts of rats. Poision used like this is ver effective. Traps are a limited measure as well.

A friend has a problem with rats, I advised them to put poison in bait boxes. The problem is that they gave an Owl living in an old house in the yard which is basically a pet at this stage and they're worried that if the Owl eats a poisoned rat it might die.
Does anyone know if It would be ok to use Storm around the place?

All the modern rodenticides carry that risk. Best to use traps instead. I use all traps myself to eliminate that risk as well as preventing rodents dieing in wall cavities, stinking up the place and causing potential maggot/bluebottle infestations.
