Do you have any strategies in place for when the water meters are switched on?

Currently I fill a bucket while waiting for my shower to warm up and change about 10L of water a day. If I keep doing that I don't see that my water charges will go up at all, but I'll be moving the tank out of the bathroom soon which will make it a bit harder to do.

Artane Aquatics do free RO and Saltwater on Thursday nights so I invested in four 20l Jerry Cans.

I Harvest Rain water using a water butt i keep a bag of activated charcoal in it to absorb anything nasty and a bag of turf to tan the water perfect for the fish I Keep (SA Catfish and Cichlids you would have to harden it and remove the turf if you keep African fish tho but that does me for the most part if we get a rare dry spell I either buy some from artane aquatics or use RO water from the filter tap I think I have done that twice maybe in the past year and some of my fish stopped breeding for a few few weeks so I try to avoid it if at all possible

This is ridiculous when we are reduced to with these water charges, It falls out of the bloody sky on a regular basis and 40 percent nationally leaks through pipes yet we hear their rhetoric about the needed to conserve water, when in reality it is just turning something else into a commodity for the benefit of big business

Water is not free, either is electricity or tv. You cant really argue that water should be free if you are using it for your fishtank which is a luxury item. I got rid of my tank, couldnt afford it.

Sorry. Will Artane Aquatics continue to do free RO water when everyone is using them for their water changes?

I dunno. It's only on Thursday evenings they do it free, you'd have to pay for it any other time...

Nobody goes in only to grab water and run.

These shops typically make a loss on livestock but a killing on dry goods.

I've never once managed to walk into Arthane and not leave with piles of stuff (filtermedia, gizmos, foods) i hadn't planned to buy.

I reckon they'd keep it going as an investment to get people in the door.

I wouldn't be so sure of that. All these shops are struggling. I can see the whole marine trade dying on its arse once the water charges come in. RO units will go out the window considering the amount of waste water they produce. Using RO in a freshwater tank will be completely insane unless you're keeping discus etc.

Will business be metered? I think they might already pay a flat fee. If they are to be metered you can forget about free RO water and can expect to start paying a lot more for it.

However if shops won't be metered this could be a nice little earner for them.

Currently no plans to start metering.

Ever see Seahorse on the weekend? Constant 3-4 man queue at the tills. Far from struggling.

RO for residents will be fine if you live in the sticks or can set up a waterbutt

Ever see them during the week when there's nobody around? Being busy on the weekend is the minimum these shops need.

There's very few specialist shops left in Dublin compared to 6 years ago and the ones that are left are working on skeleton crew staff.

if they haven't installed the meter before the charges come in then i'll be on an estimate so i'll continue as is.

if I can get ro water from my local fish store for a cheaper price than I can make it myself then I'll buy from them provided the savings are worth it lugging containers to and from the car is not appealing

does anyone know what the rates for water charges will be I know they have announced the average cost but I cannot find how much it will cost per litre.

    http://www.irishtimes.com/news/ireland/irish-news/bath-set-to-cost-16-cent-while-a-shower-will-set-you-back-25-cent-1.1787308

**cost per litre is .2 of a cent
1000 litres will cost €2 if the irish times is correct i'll try cut back on the water but its not going to be that expensive for water changes
