    A query for you.
    If a ping is sent to a networked pc with an ip of 198.162.2.255 does this mean the pc is the 256th pc on the 2nd network.

    No. IPs aren't assigned on a sequential basis. And you could just as easily have a network where the first subnet is 192.168.2.XXX

    '198.162.2.255' is just a way to represent the number '3332506367' in a way that's easier for humans to deal with.

    You can even assign a static address which can be any random address on the allowable subnet.

    You can conceptualise it that way but it won't have any influence on the time it takes for a message to travel from one machine to another.

    Was just trying to understand the 2.255 part.

    Does the question give you a subnet mask? If it's a /24 network then 255 isn't assignable to a host, it's the broadcast address for the network.

    with that netmask .255 is the broadcast address. If you send a ping to x.x.x.255 it is received by every device on the network (they may not all reply though, depends on the device).
