Congratulations to you all, reading this thread is an inspiration

Trained and planned (and planned!) for a sub 4-hr today. First time out and ran into the same problems as plenty of others from reading this thread. Knee gave in at about mile 21 and I limped it home in 4:27. Not bad all things considered!
I even took a tumble before mile 2 when I tripped across someones shoe. Morto.

Have to say, the crowd was superb, the support really got me through some tough parts. As did my friend meeting me at mile 20 and giving me a well needed lift.
    People are deadly :)

Sorry can't get this sorted on the phone, but it's a photo of a runner being lead by the hand by a pacer...

I found the new route a big disappointment. I really missed the crowds in the first few miles and the DJ halfway up Chesterfield Ave. was a complete dick, describing the many uphill miles ahead as we passed. Superb support in other places, Chapelizod, Crumlin, and from Ballsbridge onwards

Full marks to the girl dressed as a clown. Great outfit. Classic !

Full marks to the St. Johns Ambulance people too especially the guys who attended to the young woman who had a collapse just before mile 23. Hope she is alright.

I saw quite a few on the roadside with St. John's Ambulance. I think the weather caught a lot of people out.

Had to be an emergency. Can't imagine a car would be let on the course otherwise.

Wasn't today but in a previous year I was stewarding at Rathgar. A garda came to me and said he needed to allow a car to cut across the runners. Turned out it was a man driving his wife, with advanced cancer, to St Luke's for urgent treatment. Correct decision by the garda. I would trust the garda's discretion in that one today.

PB 03:40, hoped to run 03:30 but I don't think I'd have gotten better. Kinda glad I missed the 1st wave and the 03:30 pacers.

Think that running the Athlone 3/4 at marathon pace really helped this time (I was shattered after that race - never had real hills in training before ). I was comfortable up to mile 23 and for the first time I was not to be broken by Heartbreak Hill!, run/walked a bit after mile 23 to mile 25.

Conditions were tough but for me last year's Dublin Half was much tougher.

Crowds were awesome! Great crowd in Castleknock as well, welcome to the DCM!

Knew from mile 1 the target wasn't happening but managed to salvage a 15 minute PB so I'll take it :) Well done to everyone who ran and all the supporters!

Well done, don't forget that race report you promised! 15 min PB is nothing to be sniffed at!

Well the '0' had to go sometime. I came into today 24-0 on successful pacing gigs and am now 24-1 :(.
Was not feeling right from the off and even though the pace felt fine I started getting dizzy spells round mile 10 then had a few palpitations which frankly scared the sh1t outta me so I discreetly dropped just before HAlfway. Well done on AMK and Gavlor for gutting it out, I guess that's why there are 3 per group. Enjoy the night all, not feeling the best (though much better than before) so I am currently heading home.

Hey Menoscemo - sorry to hear you had a bad day.

Similar boat as you however (high temp Sat/Sun), thought I was out of the woods this morning but disaster struct early for me, coming off Leeson St i burned up and was gone to the kerb at mile 5 waiting for the wife to collect me. :-(

I didn't get to shake your hand at the start line, but I followed your training plan and was aiming for 3:39, funny coincidence that!

Your plan was great to follow, I have improved my pace remarkably by following it. Will put it to the test once I am clear and will keep you posted.

To the people outside the house on suir road in inchicore, all dressed up, FANTASTIC!

First timer here, was aiming for 4.30, but the last 6 miles were excruciating and ended up limping home with a 4.57

Kudos to all the supporters with jellybeans and motivation, and most importantly all the volunteers. Was an excellent day, even though I'm very sore right now. Ow.

I was p1ssed off a few weeks ago when I had to pull out this year because of injury but reading about how tough it was out there I think I dodged a bullet.

Hi, I want to say a huge thanks to the 3 hour pacers, particularly the 3rd guy in the team who kept motivating and pushing the guys at the back of the group. He even came back down Mount street and dragged me up the road by the hand towards the finish line ( I don't actually remember this but was told by my wife afterwards) but at this stage my legs were gone. I do remember him running back a 2nd time and pushing me up Mount Street but I had nothing left in the tank. I fiinished about 20 seconds over 3 hours but gave it everything I had so am happy with the result. The poor guy even came over an apologised afterwards even though no apology was necessary, at that point my brain was fried and I was carted off to the medical tent for an hour+. Hope I didn't ruin his 3 hour goal time.
Like most others that have commented, I found the combination of the heat and wind very tough and the support incredible.
I also want to thank the team in the medical tent and the physios who did a great job of re-hydrating me and getting me back on my feet. I'm feeling fine now. Not forgetting all the volunteers today.. Great job!

Check out John Coleman photos on West Waterford Facebook. Some good ones from the finish line

Anyone know if the guy who collapsed at 25.5miles was ok? Think he was around the 4 hour mark.

Out of curiousity, did any of you who completed only take up running recently?

I've a dodgy knee but am thinking of taking up running and 2015 seems a nice goal

My personal favourite sign seen today 'chuck Norris never ran a marathon' a few other worthy competitors but can't think of them right now

Also the fancy dress house party around Mile 12, complete with a dancing Roman on the front gate of the house alone with various other costumes. Well done!

Yes me. I took it up in March. I don't know how dodgy your knee is. My back isn't the may west but believe me when I say this, if you want, you can definitely do it.

Don't be relying on other people in order to go for a run.
Set yourself little goals, 3k 5k 10k and so on as you progress.
Just do it. Don't waste your time over thinking or planning the runs, just get out and do it.

I will admit it helps to have people at the start but you need to stay focussed and do a few a week.

That was good alright. Or what about "Run like you left the immersion on" around Sundrive Garda Station :)

Also have to say, whoever that woman was close to the 4 seasons who gave my name such a roar, and told m to get going. I cannot over emphasise how much that lifted me and drove me home. Sounded like a Cork accent, absolute gem.

Then a girl on the Shelbourne Rd roaring as she ran beside me, "I'm so happy"!! haha, I certainly wasn't sure if I was completely happy at that point but that made me laugh and the home run was something I will never forget. Amazing.

How do you add the finishing time to the table?

  • Registered Users Posts: 107 ✭✭Johnners1878

    Wow. That was tough.

Dublin last year was to be my 1st and last marathon after taking up running at 47. It was a "bucket list" thing. Messed up my sub 3.30 target time by 31 seconds, following the Garmin instead of the Pacers, and left it out on the course. Was so annoyed I had to do it again this year.

Trained well, did long miles but probably not enough hard fast ones. Was pretty confident of hitting 3.29.59. At halfway today felt good, was chatting to Enda the Sligoman 3.30 pacer (Capice?) - massive thank you to him.

Hit the wall bigtime at 21, recovered a bit, hit it again at 25. Got going at the top of Haddington Road, struggled to the line in 3.31.08. Guess I'll be back next year...

Couldn't believe the amount of collapses and distress out there today, don't remember anything like that last year. Could have been one of them myself but decided hammering the legs was one thing but heart attack was another. Suffering serious "revenge of the gels" tonight though.

The supporters today were incredible, kept me going several times when it was so tempting to bail out. Thank you all - and the Pacers, station staff and medics. It makes DCM very special.

    Anyone for Connemara in April?

I ran with 3.30 pacers today and went through half in 1.43.19 (while behind pacer) and finished 3.33. Realised while race was going on that was probably a minute or so fast and paid for it later so is entirely my fault. all other pacing groups are close to time so just interested in why 3.30 finished so far ahead of time. Not sour grapes as delighted with time but....
