    Long time lurker but I had to post to thank the three 3:40 pacers Menoscemo, Gavlor and AuldManKing. You did an extremely good job keeping us on pace, telling us when to ease off, when to fill the lungs and when to shake the arms out. It was a pleasure running with you (and the rest of the group).

    I was on your shoulder until about 17 miles before heading off on my own to try and make up 4 minutes and hit my 3:36 target. I only managed 3:37:35 but I'm extremely happy with that.

    After a day off yesterday back in the land of the living and can’t really focus on work unless I get this off my chest. I’ll keep it short-ish.

    This was marathon #4 for me and was still aiming for my first sub 4. Training was a gradual lead in time of about 6 months to DCM.

    Race series times were:
    FD 10 mile: 1.17
    HM = 1.39

    Had 4 x 20m LSRs (plus speed/hill work) under the belt so was in good shape. Tapered correctly etc.

    Start:

    Introduced myself to Gavlor, AMK & Meno @ the 3.40 pacer position and was happy out to be up with them. Was great to meet them given their contribution in the novices thread. Stuck with them until Kilmainham where I popped half an electrolyte and then they were out of sight. Crumlin was windy but tucked in behind a taller guy but didn’t feel any benefit in that.


    Mile 16
    By the KCR I had walked for the first time. Quad cramped up something fierce but ran through it.


    Mile 20-21
    Threw up – this was an issue for me at the end of DCM 2013 but never during a race. Offered some relief somewhat tbh.

    Both legs cramped and was walking without bending either knee. Had to rest against a wall where a supporter (clearly a runner) came to my aid and did some stretches with me. He kick started me back into a slow jog. By Nutley Lane I was up close and personal with someone’s rose bush thinking I’d throw up again ….but didn’t.


    22 – Finish
    The rest was just stop start. The support was out of this world but I was so far gone even the plastic clappers just got annoying and I wanted out of the noise. Crossed the line in 4.34.


    Fuel intake
    Breakfast was porridge and a bagel. On the course it was 3 gels + 1 electrolyte and plenty of water.

    I simply don’t know where to go from here. I did everything right… or so I thought. At this stage I’m disillusioned by what happened. This was to be my year.
    That’s 2 years running I’ve finished white faced and blue lips so back to the drawing board.

    Any pearls of wisdom on points to work on would be welcome.

    I found the gels they were handing out on the course quite good for myself, went down easy. Not nearly as bad as some of the very thick/sticky ones.

    Agreed. Said I wasn't going to bother with them but was around 17 miles or so I grabbed one, I just thought **** it, can't do any harm! That was a lime kind of one High 5, second was after 20 mile Iso something, cherry. Again though went down easily and didn't need to dilute with my water.

    Don't want to be to hard on you but if you never broke 4 hours before , why did you start with the 3.40 pacers .?
    You should have gone out slower than that 3.50 pacers or even the 4 hour group for the first half and then increased your pace in the second half.
    As you're read everywhere it was a tough day so don't be to hard on yourself. PB's are mostly achieved in small improvements , take two mins off your previous time then one or two off again.

Stuck with them until Kilmainham where I popped half an electrolyte and then they were out of sight. Crumlin was windy but tucked in behind a taller guy but didn’t feel any benefit in that.


    Mile 16
    By the KCR I had walked for the first time. Quad cramped up something fierce but ran through it.


    Mile 20-21
    Threw up – this was an issue for me at the end of DCM 2013 but never during a race. Offered some relief somewhat tbh.

    Both legs cramped and was walking without bending either knee. Had to rest against a wall where a supporter (clearly a runner) came to my aid and did some stretches with me. He kick started me back into a slow jog. By Nutley Lane I was up close and personal with someone’s rose bush thinking I’d throw up again ….but didn’t.


    22 – Finish
    The rest was just stop start. The support was out of this world but I was so far gone even the plastic clappers just got annoying and I wanted out of the noise. Crossed the line in 4.34.


    Fuel intake
    Breakfast was porridge and a bagel. On the course it was 3 gels + 1 electrolyte and plenty of water.

    I simply don’t know where to go from here. I did everything right… or so I thought. At this stage I’m disillusioned by what happened. This was to be my year.
    That’s 2 years running I’ve finished white faced and blue lips so back to the drawing board.

    Any pearls of wisdom on points to work on would be welcome.

    Commented briefly on the 2013 thread and with some time since then and reading around I should have ran a smarter race perhaps. More painful and less enjoyable than last year. Managed to loose 2 of my gels though when I went to take the 3rd out of a planned 4 I barely had the stomach for it. Went through half at 1:44:53. I was never quite with the 3:30 pacers at the start and was ok with letting them drift on with a plan to pick it up around miles 20-22 but that was not going to be. Happy with the pb though!

    Threw up – this was an issue for me at the end of DCM 2013 but never during a race. Offered some relief somewhat tbh.

    Both legs cramped and was walking without bending either knee. Had to rest against a wall where a supporter (clearly a runner) came to my aid and did some stretches with me. He kick started me back into a slow jog. By Nutley Lane I was up close and personal with someone’s rose bush thinking I’d throw up again ….but didn’t.


    22 – Finish
    The rest was just stop start. The support was out of this world but I was so far gone even the plastic clappers just got annoying and I wanted out of the noise. Crossed the line in 4.34.


    Fuel intake
    Breakfast was porridge and a bagel. On the course it was 3 gels + 1 electrolyte and plenty of water.

    I simply don’t know where to go from here. I did everything right… or so I thought. At this stage I’m disillusioned by what happened. This was to be my year.
    That’s 2 years running I’ve finished white faced and blue lips so back to the drawing board.

    Any pearls of wisdom on points to work on would be welcome.

    I lurked this thread in prep for the race and there was so much good advice - Some taken, some not!!

    The quote above is very like my experience of the day apart from the fact that the support at the end got me over the line. It was my first Marathon and all my training runs led me to think that I'd be around 4.00 mark. Wasn't particularly pushed if i didn;t make it and hit the half mark at a slower pace than the 20 mile runs from training but was already feeling the pain. walked in mile 15 for first time and the front of my legs from knees to hips felt like led. walked and run (more walked) from that point, literally fell forward for 1.5 miles at the end to finish in 4.38. really frustrating as I thought the last 6 would be where I'd begin a real struggle but it started 5-6 miles before that and i'd never struggled like that at that stage in training at that pace.

    any suggestions on what to do after a marathon training wise. do you let the milage dwindle away or do you get back on the horse and keep it at a base level throughout the year in prep for next year.

    the support on the course was incredible and I'll definately be back next year hopefully without the excruciating last 10 miles!!

    You should have gone out slower than that 3.50 pacers or even the 4 hour group for the first half and then increased your pace in the second half.
    As you're read everywhere it was a tough day so don't be to hard on yourself. PB's are mostly achieved in small improvements , take two mins off your previous time then one or two off again.

    Mathso, no worries ...I'll take some tough love if it's going to benefit in the long term. In answer to your Q I thought I'd done enough training to warrant a 3.40-3.50 finish. The "double your half time + 20 mins" equation put me right in with the 3.40s but hey I guess that doesn't work for me. Today I even feel had I gone out with the 4hr pacers I still would have fallen foul to what happened ...who knows. Thanks though.

    I'm no expert, but in my opinion setting out with a pace group that's even 10 mins too fast can throw your finish time off by a lot more than 10 mins. At the start, even though I was going faster than my planned pace, it felt easy, probably because my legs were well rested after the taper. I kept telling myself to slow down, even though it felt easy and the crowd was carrying me along. If I had of kept up the quicker pace from the start I would have suffered a lot more in the second half. Maybe running with 3.50 pacers would have kept you on a more even keel. Like they say, its not the distance that kills, its the pace. Its so hard to know what marathon pace should be after spending months of training going slower. Hopefully you will get your sub 4 in marathon no 5 :)

    First off, well done for finishing. Demonstrates the kind of mental strength that will stand to you in future marathons.

    There's not an awful lot from your posts that stands out as causing an obvious problem. Here are a few thoughts though:

    I noticed that you took an electrolyte tablet. Had you done that before on a long run?

    It doesn't seem like you peaked. You might want to try experimenting with a different perhaps shorter taper.

    Did you follow a plan? How well did you follow the plan?

    What kind of pace did you run your long runs at?

    Your 10m to half marathon times suggest that you got significantly fitter between the two or the 10m race was over a significantly tougher course. IMO you needed another fitness boost between the half and the marathon to set off at 3:40 pace though. Did you feel that you had that?

    Do you suffer disproportionately in the heat?

    Hi Clearlier,

    Electrolytes - yes used them on each of my lsrs and on Monday broke them into 2 halves given the water bottle sizes distributed. Drank them a good 30 mins apart.

    Didnt follow a specific plan but what I was doing weekly I followed religiously i.e. 2 x Small (5m), 1 x medium (10m) + 1 x large runs (16-20m) on average

    Long runs were approx 9min miles.

    The diff between the 10m and the HM is probably due to the fact that I ran with a pacer for the HM (quick nod and thanks to gent that is BeepBeep67) so left nothing out there when finishing.

    I would sweat more than the average person but I have that under control. I enjoy warm weather running and hydrate properly.

    Hopefully it's only minor tweaks here that are needed but the general concensus seems to be that I was aiming too high with the 3.40s but honestly didn't think 3.40-3.50 was in the realm of ridiculousness.

    seriously, is it too much to ask for those who are updating the table to use the latest version ? I've filled mine in twice now (as have others) and stupid edits have removed them again.

    In fairness, without some kind of (optmistic/pessimistic) locking on the table (which isn't possible on the forum), if somebody is slow updating the table, it is easy for the next person to quote what will become an out of date table.

    Might be an 'Aha' moment in your description. Was there much progression in your training? i.e. did you start out with 2 * 5m, 1 *10m and 1*16-20m or did you build up to it? If the latter how long did you build up to it, when did you hit 90% of your peak and how long did you sustain it for?
