Damn, I forgot to mention you in my report - now you know how RQ feels when I ignore her.

Great to see you too, and well done on the pacing gig.

Cheers Ray, you're in my halfway video looking way too cool for a man on a PB run. Well done you too!

Aw shucks, you're making me blush!

I suppose I'll have to stop ignoring you now. Any chance of a marathon out of you?

No plans to go back. Mulled over Donadea and Barcelona. Maybe...but probably not. No point unless I'm going to go at least sub 3:20.

All of your running was faster than marathon pace, close to marathon pace, or on hills (so marathon effort or harder). Most of your running should be easier, a general guide is 80% of your mileage at a minute/mile slower than marathon pace, and then specific sessions at a harder effort. I agree with the recommendation of Pfitziger & Douglas above

P&D now ordered. Thanks one and all for the feedback & support. By the stats I'm reading here this morning the weather obviously played a part and I should have popped my electrolyte earlier than I did.

I've been following this thread with interest too and ordered P&D for Kindle yesterday. I've never done nearly enough training and (as I said earlier in thread) had a very bad 4.41.51 on Monday, compared with 4.03.37 in 2012 and 4.15.22 last year. Hopefully, I'll put a bit more into it next time and finally break the 4.00.00 next year - it was within reach in 2012 but I stopped for a pretty urgent loo break at 18 miles, spent 2 minutes static and was instantly much slower when I re-emerged from the Portaloo! I'd have worn a nappy if I'd known.

I have to agree that BeepBeep67 did a great pacing job. The first 3:30 pacer was so far out i never actually laid eyes on him. I actually started a good bit behind the 3:30 pacers at the start with a view to keeping them in sight. i felt they were quite far away from me in the first few miles which was very congested so i just settled into my own pace whilst making sure i could see them. The downhill sections around miles 7-9 i think they were about 45s ahead of me but by that stage the other pacing flags were breaking away in the distance. I luckily decided to only worry about the last pacer as i was happy enough that i was running inside 3:30 pace (i have never ran Dublin before so didn't really appreciate what was waiting for me further up the course). I eventually caught BeepBeep67 around half way (i went through in 1:44:04) and after running behind him for a while i went ahead slightly as i was finding running directly behind slightly stressful. I felt really good up to 19-20 miles and get up Milltown feeling great. Was actually chatting to a fellow runner and i am not one to chat in motion. Found the long drag around Clonskeagh and up the Lucozade hill really got to me (especially as the sun had come out). Just hung on from there. One thing i really needed after getting through the Lucozade banner was a drink. They should put a drink station at the top to refuel as i felt i had to wait for ever (2 miles) to get water. I was hanging on at that stage and slowed a bit but not too much having read other reports (mile 25 was about 8:17). The crowd throughout were amazing and kept me going for the last few miles. I kept saying to myself that the last 3:30 pacer is behind me somewhere. If he catches me i will kick on. Finding it funny now that you had stopped for a while (hope you are ok) and weren't chasing me down after all. Crossed the line in 3:29:04 and was absolutely delighted. Glad i set my target at 3:30 and not faster and learnt a valuable lesson to trust yourself when running and not put it all in the hands of the pacers. Thanks again for a great job BeepBeep67.

Slightly underestimated the task at hand but have gotten over my "never again" mantra and will train harder for the next one.

So basically Marathon running would be great if there was a device that measures your body state in real time and give you feedback on what you need to avoid collapse.
Only prb is such a device doesn't exist.
As health monitoring and wearable tech seems to be this year's hot topic, I fully expect the next generation of fancy running watches to include temperature sensors for air and body temperature. Air pressure and humidity and even passively measured blood pressure may well be possible too. The software and hardware to do this kind of analysis already exists and I consider it just packaging and marketing before improved training and racer oriented live monitoring is available. (My other expectation is linking in the GPS tracking for the route elevation and/or the intended programmed route to aid in pacing over variable courses).

No idea whether it'll be the likes of Garmin or anyone else, but I'm guessing by 2016 for most of this. As to whether it'll improve standards or give people a further excuse for training less is to be seen.

That's a novel :), well done, I was in the pub missed you this time, next year :)

    I wrote a long report as I hadn't time to write a short one.:D

Sorry I missed you in the pub - last time I saw you, you were disappearing off over the horizon in the Terenure 5. Looking forward to bumping into you at a race soon.

My race report is here. Race number 61 for pics etc.

    Great report S.
I do agree that although it wasn't a pb time, it was a pb performance in the conditions on the day. You can save the official pb for your 'perfect ten' next time :).
    Well done.

My DCM race report if anyone is interested! It's a long one and just wanted somewhere to post it!

    Start:
It has been 10 years since I was last in this position, but the feelings were very familiar. The waiting was over, the countdown showed not weeks or days, but minutes until I and 14900 others were to be set free to pound the streets, all with our own stories and all about to make everlasting memories.

Felt great at the start line, feeling the excitement of the masses of athletes around me all rearing to go. After numerous toilet visits, I lined up just ahead of the 3:30 and 3:40 pace groups, I planned to take it fairly easy for the first few miles, let the 3:30s overtake and try and stick with the 3:40 group up from about 4 miles up through the park. I was pretty confident in coming home around 3:45 with a 3:3x finish my A goal. The atmosphere was electric as the Irish national anthem was played and I got chatting to a few fellow runners around me, commenting on the great conditions the Dublin weather had afforded us (at least it seemed so to me at the time). I discarded my old painted splattered Adidas tracksuit top and was ready.

    Miles 0-3:
The slow shoe shuffle leading to the start line didn't last long and the runners quickly got into their strides, not what I'd experienced in other marathons and not what I expected. After rounding the first corner I saw the first sign to make me smile "I know a shortcut", Georgian Dublin looked great as we made our way to Stephens green, dodging the traffic islands, up to the Liberties with the market sign across the road. Good crowds for the start, I was passed by the 3:30 pacers around Cuffe St, maybe one day, I'll be able to follow them I thought. Turn down Thomas and onto streets I'm more familiar with down to Dublin castle, pass the Porterhouse and onto the quays, with a mass of spectators on the bend and a sea of thousands on bobbing heads down in front of me this feels great and I'm feeling good. Take a few sips from the first water station, I'm conscious not to drink too much too early and end up with a full bladder. I was rather perturbed my someone chucking their bottle into the Liffey in front of me, shortly after this I heard a crash behind me and looked back to see a girl had hit the deck hard and was about to be helped by those around her, two sides of the personalities that make a marathon!
    Splits: 08:43, 08:10, 08:10

    Miles 3-6:
Passed a runner pushing his brother in a wheelchair at Guinness, fair play to him. Turned over the river and up towards the park passing a second wheelchair, this time a fella working the incline at the Phoenix. I wasn't looking forward to the climb to the zoo, but it didn't feel at all bad, good sign here "run faster the loins have escaped". Crowds dropped off a bit in the park and I popped my headphones in for a bit, more slips at the next station, didn't feel the drag up the park as much as expected. Good noise at the cheer zone roundabout and continued to feel good at this stage, the expected difficult headwind didn’t materialize and instead a side-wind from the left, but not severe. Popped my first gel at 5.5 miles. Elected to go around the cobbles on the final roundabout and was glad to come out the other side of the park at mile 6, thinking not far to 9.5 now and seeing the family waiting.
    Splits: 08:25, 08:27, 08:30

    Miles 6-9:
Onto Castleknock and roads I didn't know, crowds picked up again and got to high five a few kids around the 10k mat. Just as well as this section was quite a drag and the first time I felt a little under stress. Soon forgot that as I reached the top to a huge crowd and DJ pumping out some tunes, great stuff. Round the corner onto college road and onto a downhill section, popped the headphones in again and was conscious not to blast it down here as other runners passed, back into the park at mile 8 onto Knockmaroon which I enjoy running, down the upper Glen, again taking it handy, seeing Spiderman and a blind runner and her glide. Glad to see the 9 mile marker, meant I was closing in on Chapelizod and the support there. Hadn’t been clock watching too much so far nor looking at my two pace bands.
    Splits: 08:34, 08:11, 08:22

    Miles 9-12
Out of the park and first Lucozade stop of the day, took a few sips and a little water. Make my way to the right hand side of the road where I expected to see family, great crowds here around the bridge and started to think I'd miss them until my father-in-law give me a shout from my left, looked around to see my son on his shoulders and my wife looking in the wrong direction until I shouted back at them, a great boost even if I didn't see the others! Round the corner pub and up towards the hill at St Laurence, pass barbecue smells in the same spot as the Rock n Roll half, didn't smell as good this time, but the fella cooking seemed very pleased with himself as he drew comments from the runners. Felt the hill biting as we came up to the underpass, a good chorus of Oggie, Oggie, Oggie echoed around, which I didn't feel like joining in! It was just after here the 3:40 group came alongside, felt good that I'd held them off this long, now if I could just stay with them. Up onto Sarsfield and through another underpass to Inchicore, felt different running with a bigger group, started to feel a little laboured now and the 3:40 guys opened a gap on me. Took my second gel at 11m just as the third 3:40 pacer, who I recognised from following boards.ie, passed. Pass Kilmainham Goal, thinking of my visit there with my wife's late grandparents. I missed the drinks stop shortly afterwards on the left whereas all the previous ones where on both sides. Thought about asking someone for a sip, but didn't. Great crowds here again as we passed right on the south circular and a party atmosphere opposite the EuroSpar with supporters in fancy dress perched on walls. Pass here and was glad to reach 12 miles, waiting for my second wind.
    Splits : 08:29, 08:39, 08:44

    Miles 12-15
Pass James’ hospital, just about holding it together, my second wind is not coming, but another wind is as I approach Dolphins Barn, a strong wind too right into our faces with no shelter from it. Good crowds here and a giant inflatable across the road, thought to myself 'why is this here and not at half way'? I passing a fair few walking now and am determined to keep it going, but with the 13 mile marker in sight my legs feel like lead and my stomach feels dodgy. Drop down to a walk on Crumblin Road, felt gutted but thinking I'll do this for a minute or two and then push on, jog to the half way clock which reads 1:52, I make my way slowly to the next drinks station to take on some much needed fluid. still hopeful of a sub 3:49 PB or a sub 4 finish at this stage , but also asking myself why I feel this crap so early on, 20 mile training runs never felt as hard. This feels like such a long drag. Good sign around here makes me laugh 'Run like you've left the emersion on!' Mostly ran on the remainder of Crumlin , pass our lady's hospital, but dropped back to a walk a couple of times, got good encouragement from my fellow runners, one guy in in parkrun t-shirt in particular as we entered Drimmagh, the crowd were fairly sparse here. Queue of traffic as we turned left at here had me wondering if the guards would let some through stopping me as I tried to find a rhythm again.
    Splits: 08:47, 11:21, 09:49

    Miles 15-18
Struggled through the next section, which turns out to be a bit of a blur, not knowing this part of town. Still run/walking and grateful take a couple of Jellies from kids supporting. A lot of runners are now walking. I take another gel at 16m, feels hard on the stomach. Good crowds a noise as we enter, what I know now is Terenure, with shops and bars on both sides, we have to move to one side approaching the high street as an ambulance blazes its way through, the first of many to be seen today, hoping the person is ok.
    Splits: 11:17, 12:38, 09:47

    Miles 18-20
Out of Terenure and onto nice leafy suburbs, nice place to live I think to myself, the mile markers are increasing welcome sights, but each feels further away. I whip my phone out at 19 to text my wife to see if they are up around the 20 mile mark. Onto Milltown Road, more good crowds as we pass under the Luas bridge, nice part of town again, have a another couple of jellies and pass a young fella dressed as the Hulk, with a ‘You’ll smash sign’, my boy would be impressed! Passed somewhere around here by the 3:50 pace group from wave 2, which is a bit demoralizing at this stage as they started 10 minutes back and I stop to help a guy with cramp.
    Splits: 12:11, 11:58

    Miles 20-22
Up around Clonskeagh and its pretty much walking for me, I can feel a blister forming on my left foot and take my last gel at 21 for what it’s worth. I get chatting to a guy in an Ironman top from Wales, I’d seen him running backwards earlier and he was struggling too, having completed the ultra-endurance event 4 weeks ago, we walked together up the Roebuck Road hill and I can understand its reputation now, I had expected to be motoring up it much earlier! An ambition of an Ironman event feels like a pipe-dream right down. I know my wife is somewhere away 22 miles now and I wish the Ironman good luck as I break into a jog from the top.
    Splits: 12:59, 16:04

    Miles 22-25
Nice bit of downhill on leafy Fosters Avenue, pass UCD and I manage to run most of this, slowly. Looking out for a church that my wife said she was near, there’s good support down here and I eventually spot the missus and her mum on the corner turning onto the dual carriageway, no son this time! I stop briefly for a chat and pass over my headphones and belt as they encourage me to keep going, my mum-in-law evens runs with me for a hundred meters or so, which is a good boost to keep me going, walked over the flyover, spotting the Welsh Ironman again, I break into a jog on the other side of the main road. Turn right into towards town at Nutley Lane, more ambulances around, there seems to be a lot of people struggling today. Not long to go now, looking forward to the RDS
    Splits: 11:40, 13:15, 12:51

    Miles 25-Finish
RDS in my slights and really want to run in from here, but finding it so hard to maintain a run/jog, so it’s a mix. I spot a runner I’ve recently met just up ahead and I catch her up and run beside for a bit, I find it hard to sustain her slower pace and pull ahead, but I pay for that by dropping down to a walk again! Snaking around the final stages now, pass the barracks at Beggars Bush, seeing the 800m sign is a boost and I pick up the pace. Right onto Mount Street and the crowds get bigger and bigger, when the finish line is in sight the crowds swell on both sides, I maintain an ok pace until the line and see the clock ticking towards 4:30. I run as best I can to try and get under that number but finish 20 seconds over, my chip time will be under I think to myself. Feel a little emotional but no tears and relieved to have finished. I wobble fairly unsteadily around to get my medal, goodie bag and drop-bag. Share a laugh at four lads who have finished, sitting at a bus stop in the finish area, waiting on a bus that’s not coming any time soon! Speak to my wife and find her and the family waiting near the museum, I can a great reaction from my three-year-old son who’s delighted to try my medal on. He wants to have a race to the waiting car now!
    Split: 10:45

    Thoughts:
So my race didn’t go to plan and I blew up like I’d never done before. I knew from halfway my goal times had gone and I was disappointing in having to walk so much. What had gone wrong? Did I start to quick (probably the overriding factor)? Did I overestimate my capabilities? Training had gone well with no injuries, my 3 longest runs of 20, 21 and 20 had all felt good, had I gone too fast on these? Why couldn’t I have felt like I did on those days? Where my mid-week runs not long enough? Did I not have a sufficient base before my 16-week training plan? Did my recent colds and lack of sleep the night before play a part? Was my nutrition right? Did I taper too much? Did I practice enough hills and drags? Did the warmth and the wind affect me? Did I drink enough early on?

All these questions, but my overriding thought and the one that entered my head around half-way was that I was just having a bad day, my runs in the last couple of weeks were sluggish, compared to when I felt strong as my ox at my peak mileage. I’ve heard and read about others who struggled on Monday, affected by the winds and the warm temperatures (17 C) and I saw more participants forced into a walk than I’d experienced before. I wasn’t overly surprised to hear that one of the 3:40 pacers dropped out around halfway.

But I’d thoroughly enjoyed the Dublin Marathon, despite the pain and the tough course. The crowds were amazing and really made it for me, also having family and friends there (I’d not really had that in previous marathons) made it such a special day. I want to do it again, not something I’ve said immediately after my previous three. I’ll be back next year hopefully, to have another go at beating my younger self or at least try to halt the decline in my times since Chicago in 2000. Next time to, in the words of the Beastie Boys ‘Run the marathon ‘til the very last mile’. I’m pretty proud of my set:

    Oct 22 2000 : Chicago Marathon : 3:49:11 (chip)
    Apr 22 2001 : London Marathon : 3:54:42 (chip)
    Nov 7 2004 : New York Marathon : 4:14:05 (chip)
    Oct 27 2014 : Dublin Marathon : 4:29:28 (chip) ; 4:30:20 (gun)

Some drop back in positions on the split positions, I normally pride myself on this being the other way around!!
    10K 00:52:26 : Stage Position 3062
    Half 01:51:55 : Stage Position 4693
    30K 02:54:32 : Stage Position 6810
    Gun Time 04:30:20 : Overall Position 7796

Well done on hitting the target. I think we must be in similar shape. We both ran 1.32 in Charleville. I ran the first half in 1.44.01 and finished in 3.29.24. I'll have to get my 20 second revenge next time. Cork next year??

First marathon for me. What a trip! started long distance training in January, lost 25 pounds between now and then. Love the running for the challenge it gives me but also the solitude!

My time went out the window from mile 20 onwards. Roebuck killed me but I think the road from dolphins barn to walkinstown roundabout took a lot out of me although i didn't realise it at the time. The wind in your face around Crumlin was crazy.

Atmosphere was brilliant and inspiring to see people in the mid 60's and 70's running (and running past me).

Are the stage positions correct on the TDL website? If so nearly 800 people passed me between 10K and halfway. This despite me probably going too fast on this section.

Between Half way and the finish the site has me making up nearly 1700 places, which seems crazy considering I had a 3 minute positive split.

Looks like there was certainly a problem with the 10k mat, about 1500 people didn't register a split there, compared to around 150 at the half, and 250 at the 30k. Around 290 DNF, so only a very small amount of people who passed the half and 30k didn't get a split.

So the 10k/half anomaly is easily explained, there were lots of people ahead of you who didn't register a time at 10k, but did at half.

The second anomaly is harder to explain, but not that surprising. To use the word of the week: "carnage". Taking a random sampling (page 33 of the results, contains your results). Only 1 didn't have a half split, so 99 results. Of those, only 7 had a negative split. Of the remaining 92, the average positive split was 15m32s. Only 5 had a positive split faster than you. So of those 100, you had a better second half than 88% of them. Extrapolate that over a couple of pages of results, and it's not difficult to see how you made up that amount of places in the second half

Just thinking with lots of people not getting their 10k split, the position at 10k is probably a bit off. My position at 10k was ~800th, but was down to ~2300 at halfway (despite maintaining a steady pace for the entire first hald). So maybe I was the 800th person to be registered at 10k as opposed to cross it! finished around 1300 which is consistent with the fact I ran a positive split of only 40 seconds.
