Can we discuss Franno's narrow mindedness yet

No, the debate itself is better suited to humanities.

Yes Francis has spun it briefly into a topic about Rugby however this seems like an ill judged ploy to make himself relevant and I don't see the need for us to be giving him a platform.

The problem with this topic is that the 'debate' can often lead to alot of opinions that could leave a subset of our community ill at ease and uncomfortable which isn't on. We on the rugby forum have refused to allow people with similar prejudices against women and other minorities a platform here, so we will do the same in this case.

The Boards Rugby forum is open to EVERYONE and shouldn't be a place where anyone should feel uncomfortable.

This has to be the best anthem of the Six Nations.

I was cringing last year in Rome when the Irish anthem was barely audible, and the Italians blasted out with this. I was cringing 90 minutes later too, but for different reasons.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,308 ✭✭✭✭.ak

Ah the French anthem for me, followed by the Flower of Scotland (in Scotland).

I'm just waiting for Russia to join the 6N.

    Now that's an anthem.

I did nearly the exact same programme, found the dips by far the hardest excercise but the programme is totally worth it. Put on nearly 8 pounds in 6 weeks. I also eat like a horse too!

Currently on week 4 of a 5x5, really enjoying it.

Did you do the chins? I don't mind chins but I'm 98kg so 10x10 is not going to happen for me. I'll just about manage the dips I reckon, been doing them weighted recently

Can you break the 10 sets up through the session? I'm like that, I can barely string 10 pull ups together (because I'm weak, not my size). But I can do 100 if I do 10x10 over a session with other sets between them.

From what I've read the rest of 90 seconds between sets is fairly crucial so not sure if it would be as worthwhile to split them up throughout the workout

I could just swallow my pride and use the assisted pull-up machine when I fail!

Yeah did the chins, had to use the assist machine for some sets though. I'm 95kg and 6 foot 4 so yeah chins aren't really possible!

Yep. First time doing any lifting really. Finding it's testing my patience a bit as I can lift higher than it's the programme is telling me too, but I understand why as you'll plateau too soon if you lift too heavy too early. Other than that it's really enjoyable.

It's good programme to start with, it's great that you can see progressions each session so your motivation will always be there to lift heavier.

the obvious question I would say are what are the goals of your training, also don't forget to sleep as much as you eat. Everyone forgets the importance of lost of resting.

Also in a slightly similar vein after not being in a gym in 3 years and sill eating like a horse I've lost over 24 pounds in 5 weeks (money is the best reason to lose weight ever). however I have no strength left.

Main reason for starting it is just pure boredom. Sick of swapping similar hypertrophy programs every month of so for the last year. This is something totally different

I did a strength program a friend got off The Western Province pre-season program in College and although I'd often be on the verge of spewing it was very satisfying. Now I've no real interest in strength training anymore but hopefully the GVT can bring a similar level of intensity

What does the 40x0 mean in terms of tempo?

And what kind of loading is involved - are you supposed to progress every week?

I just started back lifting last week after a layoff of a few months, so I'm looking for a new programme.

Wouldn't mind focusing on hypertrophy for a bit though.

Edit: On reading a bit more, GVT sounds a bit extreme. I don't think I'd be on top of my diet enough over here to make sure I'd be getting proper recovery.

Good run down of it. Supposed to be unreal for packing on muscle mass

Not sure how you'd manage it there though!

Buy a pullup bar, stick in your door, alternate different pull ups, chin ups, with good form. Throw in dips and push ups between sets. All of that would be chest, shoulders, back and some upper arms.

Really though you don't want to negate the core, so any good exercise regime should include all the body groups equally.

10 reps for 10 sets, 40x0 is the temp and then the interval between sets.

Not sure how you work out the tempo, but for lifting, especially power lifting/olympic lifting, the tempo is crucial. Way ahead of me there tho...

    Rep?

    Set?

Tempo of 4 with no rest in between?

Reps = how many times you perform the move, set is the entire set of reps. So 10 x 10 push ups is 10 pushups (reps) in a set, 10 times. (100 pushups).

Lads in there lifting big heavy yokes and me struggling to do 3 pushups. :D

For me I found I progressed the most when I trained at home. Maybe it was a sub-conscience thing, or maybe it was because I had no idea what I was doing, but now I'm back in the gym and happy to train hard because I know what I'm doing.

Sure at the moment I'm basically lifting a barbell with barely any weight on it, beside lads doing 100kg. You have to just worry about yourself really.
