Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Woodburner Stove

    Hi,

    We are considering putting an inset woodburning stove into an extension currently being built. The stove will only really be required to heat one 15*15 foot room and possibly take the sting out of the kitchen via a door that is most often open. We want to go with a woodburner stovax riva studio primarily for asthetic purposes.

    I think a 5kw stove will be sufficient or possibly the 8kw version. Any opinion welcome.

    How efficient is burning hardwood as opposed to coal. How hungry will this burner be compared to a coal fire. Does it make better sense to go for a multifeul?

    Hi ,

    Just remember that if you go for a 5kw stove for example the max output of the stove is 5kw, most people like to leave the stove working at maybe 50% to 70% so the 8kw would be my advice especially if your leaving a door open and hoping for the heat to travel a bit.

    It does also depend on your house and how well it holds the heat etc as if its really well insulated then obviously the 8kw will be excessive.

    Another thing to remember is that the smaller the stove then the smaller the burning chamber, alot of the 4 and 5 kw stoves have a tiny burning chamber and its difficult to fit in hardwood timber blocks etc.

    Burning seasoned hardwood is ideal, the problem i find in Ireland is the supply and cost of it so just be careful and check around locally for the cost and availability of it. It is without a doubt though the cleanest way to use a stove and it will be super efficient on seasoned hardwood. Coal is great for heat but its also alot dirtier and the waste ash can become a problem.

    The stove will be at least 50% lighter on fuel than your average open fire and it will also eliminate the problem of a draughty chimney even if the fire is not lighting because you can just close the vents on the stove.
