i am a bit of an autonumerologist,/fan of interesting numbers. The UK is full of them and Ireland has a few, JIM ,CID, DIM,EIE 10 of course, MIN1.
In think many have been mentioned on Boards over the years and excellent model related ones like 635 CSI, 750 z,

Anyhow the reason this came into my head , I was driving along the motorway in France when I was passed out by a funky Mini, wide wheels and wings ,though not grotesque, and perhaps a lowered roof.

    beautiful no. GIN 1

so i googled it, got nowhere, Cartell told me it was an Austin Seven, so early in the life of minis.
Wikipedia told me it was Kerry 62 to 73. so i assume pre 70.

I assume it is Uk based, as I have never heard reference to it in Ireland.

    any info chaps?

Silver yes, snorting along so hardly an Austin Seven.

    Don't know it but it's a UK registration 1968 Austin Cooper S.

Must be old info on Cartell? Recent reg transfer?

Down on the DVLA as an Austin first registered 1st Nov 1979. Date of Manufacture 1968 (that sort of difference can happen with imports to the UK). 1275cc, taxed until the end of August and MOT'd to 4th Sept 2014. Insured as a "AUSTIN MINI COOPER S".

No idea when the plate made the hop across the water though.

Not a standard UK number. Until recently they didn't use the I.

Well obviously. :p It transferred over sometime in the past when it was possible to hop over.

Anyway, the thread does show that info on any particular database may/may not be correct/bang up-to-date.

I don't think it has been possible to do it that way round for very many years....since Independece I'd guess. You could at one time use a UK reg here, until the 70s I think, but not the other way round as far as I know (VIP 1 excepted

It was possible to get Irish plates onto the UK register until the late 70's/early 80's....hence the 'VIP 1' transfer.

This thread a couple of weeks ago.... http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2057165429

There's lots of old southern Irish reg's for sale in the UK for transfer onto your UK car today if you have the money.
You can then bring the car over to Ireland on holidays and confuse the hell out of everyone especially if its a vintage car on old black and silver plates.

    I havent come across '750 Z'?
What make/model of vehicle is it allocated to?

MIN1 was never on a Mini. Started off on a MK1 Escort. Then ended up on a K10 Micra.
I do wonder if its still around.

my mind went blanker than usual as I typed. and I added in my pals motorbike which is ,I think z 750, suits the bike as i recall.

another one which escapes me ,and i have seen it on this thread but the no. describes the car model, sports car, possible green, south dublin

as a teenager i recall seeing a fiat 1100 i think reg no CID999, ideal for police on call
there were two in my home town "Bid 5" which reading as "Bids" would have suited an auctioneer. the second was Aid5 which could read Aids, while my friend actually had HIV reg,
I dont recall how far up the alphabet Cavan went but i imagine quite a few rakes would have been happy with RID

i had a beetle reg Bit so FIT would suit an athlete and GIT would suit MANY.
Hit, Kit,Lit (keep her Lit, Sheamie) ooh Nit, Wit and Tit

205 GTI was a class one, discussed here often

and from Wicklow 1 ANI would have suited an IAN

just checked Wiki and Leitrim ended in KIT ,so no hope of unearthing TIT5

EIE 10 if memory serves me correctly was originally the number on a dark green Ford Anglia de luxe, not a Mini.

    Probably transferred at some stage

I was told in the 1980s that EIE 10 was on a Mini owned by a priest. However the Mini in the photo does not have external door hinges --- they were deleted in 1969, so that conflicts with the year of first issue of EIE 10, which was 1963.

    Just as well :D

They used to hold back numbers like that for good taste, the complete KIP series was not issued in Kilkenny as a KIP is another name for a brothel.

Heard a story of a priest in Carlow having a mini with " rip 13". More than likely an urban legend but would have been funny if true.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,783 ✭✭✭rugbyman

true story, the Customs Officer who used dip lorries and cars for (then)red diesel in our area ,had a reg DIP, and we are over 100 miles from kilkenny.
his nickname was " Jimmy(made up ) the Dipper"

Yup, I have KIT 602, one of the last.

GIP & KIP were not issued in Killkenny the first time around. Dunno what GIP meant though?
RIP wasn't on the reverse issues but was issued in the first...

Don't forget the famous DIE 222 on the hearse that is still around!

That Mini looks very modern indeed. But we are not allowed to talk about such things on here.

Reminds me of a car I used to see in the late 80's, belonging to a Gaelgoir, with the reg 87-BAC-nnnn - the guy was annoyed that the then-new reg system had the letters for the counties in english. It made the papers as the guy was brought to court over it...

PS: back on-topic, there is a white VW Golf Mk1 convertible with the reg 1 GLI (Golf GTI convertibles are badged as GLI). I'd seen it looking very tatty around 2001, and I was afraid that it might get scrapped, but I saw it a few years ago, all restored, and looking as sharp as a tack - looks like the reg saved it :)
