Leaving Cert students' "graduation" ceremonies.

    The traditional understanding of the word "graduation" is that it means receiving a certificate for the course that you have studied after passing the final exams of that course. The farewell ceremonies for Leaving Cert students take place before even the first exam starts, never mind before the results are published. Therefore, the referral to farewell ceremonies as "graduations" is blatantly erroneous and one of the most BS forms of political correctness.

    So why do school authorities refer to these ceremonies as "graduations"? It's an example of the dumbing-down of education. It makes students feel that they've achieved something that they have not yet achieved, i.e. the passing of exams.

    Why not just call it a farewell ceremony?

    I really wouldn't lose too much sleep over it to be honest. Don't you have more things to be doing anyway Enda, like chatting up aul wans at garden festivals and systematically crippling an entire nation financially?

    Leaving cert students have more to be worrying about this week than your pedantic issues. Why not approach your local principal and start the change.

    You can start an online petition to go with it
