In and around the coastal area of Clonakilty. Clonakilty (with Kinsale) has best selection of bars and restaurants without being too far from the city. Theres also shops, markets, cinemas lots of places to see. Id put this as number one but beware of the trade off, its not really a coastal town so stay in town and drive 5 mins to beach or stay by a beach and drive to town. Youre within 45 minutes of Cork city.

Crookhaven. Near Barley cove (amazing beach) on the mizen head. One of if not the most beautiful parts of the country. Far more remote though one (or two?) pubs and restaurant. Not as many places to see as the others but is an amazing place in itself.

Bantry. Not as much on as Clonakilty or the range of pubs and restraunts and doesnt have the great beaches of the other two but there are a few good restaurants and murphys is an excellent bar. If you love hillwalking it is a great base.

This has a great list of cozy traditional cottages in picturesques locations of west cork in Schull, Skibbereen, Castlehaven and Baltimore.

From there you have numerous beaches and little villages to travel to for a bit of groceries or a pint looking out at the Atlantic. Mary Ann's in Castletownsend one the top 20 restaurants in Ireland and its a pub! The jolie brise in Baltimore is also one of the top 20 pizzerias in Ireland but overlooks Baltimore harbor where the sun spends about 40 minutes setting each evening.

Whalewatchin can be done from Union Hall ( No.1 thing to do in Cork according to TripAdvisor) or Baltimore aswell as scuba diving. You can also go island hopping to Sherkin or further out to Cape Clear(Gaeltacht) or stay over night at their glamour campsites.

Lough Ine near skibbereen is the largest saltwater in Europe (I think). one can kayak the lake at night to see the Phosphorous glow under the water or hike the hill for a spectacular view.

Theres also a bicycle routes for that area but I don't have a link for that.

Skibb has an award winning supervalue, a lidl, 12 pubs, 2 hotels, 4 chippers, a Chinese and a farmers market every Saturday mornings in the old Mart grounds so you won't be stuck for grub.

Up to the start of September there will be numerous rowing and sailing regattas in the area aswell as music and childrens festivals.

If you wana do West Cork get down deep and Whest into the wilds and away from the city.

Edit:Thought of more there's a cookery course on Heir Island that's supposed to be good. I'd second Balmed out's suggestion to head out to Mizen Head, great scenery there too.

    Any tips?

Around Clonakilty would be a good place to base yourself. Lovely beach in Inchdoney but also within handy run to Courtmacsherry, Kinsale, Owenahincha and further west to Skibereen etc.

The Mizen head - Schull or Goleen. Barleycove Beach nearby.
Sheep's head is nice too but no really good beaches.
