Lara's 501 - 20th anniversary

Anyone remember it? Warwickshire's match v Durham was a nailed-on draw and Lara was 200+ not out heading into the final day. He batted all day and the cricket world stopped what it was doing as the landmark approached.

I was listening on the car radio as 5:55 arrived and a new over started, Lara facing on 497. He knocked the first two or three balls casually back to the bowler or into the inner ring. At this, Keith Piper at the other end came down the wicket and said 'You know it's the last over Brian?'

    'Oh' he replied, not 6.30?'

Next ball went whistling through the covers for four.

What a player. At his peak probably the best.

Ha, Keith Piper take a bow. It would have been cruel if Lara had been stranded short of his 500. By coincidence, The previous First Class high score (Hanif Mohammad, 499) also suffered from mis-information.
With two balls to go Hanif had reached 498, but the ground scoreboard had not updated, and showed 496 instead. Hanif was a bit circumspect that Wazir might declare overnight, and decided to go for it.

Hanif played the penultimate ball of the day past point, and after completing the first run, decided to go for the second, intending to keep strike. Little did he know that he could easily have played out the ball and waited for the last one of the day. Instead, he decided to take the risk, and was run out by over a yard.

Brian Lara was peerless when he was on top of his game, he made it look easy.
