Swimming at the beach (Bettystown?)

    Howdy folks,

Trying to get control of my weight and get back in shape. Have been walking and jogging up and down the boardwalk a lot lately.

In the next couple of weeks, I've been looking to include a bit of swimming in my routing to vary things up a bit and keep me active.

The plan was to introduce swimming (in the sea, rather than a swimming pool).

I was wondering, as it's been about 20 years since I've swam at the beach, whats it like these days? Is it safe? (is the water okay?), and around this time of year have I any un-friendlies to take into consideration (perhaps fish of the jelly variety)?

I would be somewhat competent about my swimming efforts, so not too worried about ending up out at the ocean or being air-lifted by the coast guard, just more interested in the 'everday, day to day' kinda side of things.

    Anyone been swimming lately?

    Cheers :)

As a sports enthusiast be careful. Maybe go with somebody or join a club? If that's out then perhaps consider having an escort for the first few times. A local kayaker to paddle beside you in case something goes amiss. Wet suits give good flotation too and if possible have somebody spot you from shore. Try and learn how to read rips. I Kayak and being honest, I've been pulled out to sea on occasion but the consequence for me is lesser than for you. As for jellies, it's heavily weather variant. But sure what's a sting or seven.

Ultimately, I'd suggest a club rather than you Going solo.

You just shouldn't take the risk with water.

If I'd the money for escorts, I wouldn't be swimming to burn off the calories! :D:P

Seriously, though, I'm fairly confident of my water ability. I wouldn't put myself in a position I wasn't sure of myself.

I may head out with someone, alright, but it's more than likely just going to be me, myself, and I.

I do appreciate the advice, though. :)

Well if you're ever up this neck of the woods and swimming let me know. I've no issue spending an hour on the water. :)

What's your neck of the woods?

I might take you up on that, if you're a bit of a water person :) (beats doing it alone). Though I'm not much of a professional swimmer, really. More a 'float in a general direction' kind of swimmer. :o
