I was browsing TMart, a cheap chinese gadget site I've used once before.

They have an interesting device on sale : http://www.tmart.com/Wireless-Dual-Passive-Infrared-Alert-A9-Black_p174372.html

I've just pulled the trigger and ordered it out of curiosity with a few other gadgets, but it typically takes a good 3-4 weeks to deliver.

So it seems to be an infra-red motion sensor to detect movement or can be switched to more intelligently detect people.

The two key features here are
    1. It takes a SIM card and can call you if it detects motion.
    2. It seems to be usb charged and the battery is claimed to last between 5 - 20 days depending on the detection mode you choose.

Anyway, thought I throw it out there as an interesting device, which if it works might be suit some people... eg. securing a shed, garage, etc.
Not sure if it's external though, might only be for internal use...

If you threw in a pay as you go sim card and left it running in a house/holiday home it could take the place of an Eircom phonewatch type setup.

    regards,
    CD
