Actually that was about the only time Marty ever asked a hard question. Cody as is his want bullied him. I agree with the substantial point though Marty is awful actually I don't know of anyone who likes him as a commentator.

Personally think Maloney is biased when it comes to Dublin.

Have to say I really enjoyed the respective montages in the build up with the interviews. Really helped build the atmosphere.

Anyone know why Ger Canning is doing more radio commentaries these days instead of his usual TV commentaries? Has he been "demoted"?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,285 ✭✭✭Frankie Lee

Ger Canning will do both finals without doubt. Another area where RTE falls down badly is the failure to display the subs that have been made. It was particularly noticeable yesterday evening with Morrissey being unable to inform the viewers of subs being made. Sky display the subs list before the game too which is helpful considering there is usually around 10 to come on.

He's a complete disaster on the radio, someone needs to tell him that there's a much more descriptive commentary required when doing radio.

I might watch todays match on RTE as Darragh Maloney is commentating but I honetsly think that Sky's coverage is a lot better than RTE.

McIntyre is a better commentator than Marty Morrissey,Paul Early is miles better than Tommy Carr,Rachel Wyse is a better anchor than Lyster, the pundits are easier to listen to and discuss the games without petty bickering and have some basic manners which is sadly lacking from one of RTE's panel.

Sky's coverage may not be perfect but it's well ahead of RTE for me.

Would totally agree with this.I watched a replay of kerry mayo match this morning on Sky and found it much easier on the ears than marty and carr who were unbearable at times and also lost in extra time trying to figure out who was on and off. Also the analysis was much better from D. O Se and Senan connell. Having to listen spillane and brolly today talking over each other made me switch over to hymns of praise for peace.

Again, a few observations on today:
    1. As mentioned earlier, lack of clarity on changes, subs etc. A good sideline reporter in touch with the benches badly needed.
    2. Kickouts missed during replays...time and time again. With kickouts so important to team strategy this is bad. If you need replays, use a split screen but show the restarts.
    3. I'm not a fan of Carney, but today he really got on my tits. When Donegal got on top, he kept slagging off the Dublin players by claiming Dublin players were believing their own hype, and gloating in their defeat to his own county. Very insulting to Dublin players who in the end don't write the **** written about them. In fairness they were very good champions and were a credit to themselves, and only lost to a better team in the end

What was D.Maloney saying that donegal would be very satisfied to be around 5 points down at that stage, does he know something I don't ?

Thought the view was the dubs had a stringed bench so donegal would need to build up a lead ?

Agree with the above, insulting to say players believed their own hype, they can't control what's written about them

Martin Carney shouldn't be allowed near games, especially those involving Mayo or Donegal. He's from both counties!

The production standards need to be improved for live games. I'd argue TG4 is more polished.

Can't believe he wasn't MOM not to mind not being nominated, where was MD all day? The analysts on Friday who said that he wouldn't have the legs for MD did not take into account that MD is useless without the ball:rolleyes: And possession
is what it is. It was a good a performance from a midfielder that I have ever seen, he ran the show.

The Hurling final is on RTE One. Shame for Sky HD customers who don't subscribe to Sports and therefore now have no HD option.

It's on the main SS channel too and not SS3

Whoever picked James O'Donoghue as MOTM on Saturday should be banned from doing so in future.
Don't get me wrong, JOD had a fine game, but David Moran, Kieran Donaghy and Cillian O'Connor were outstanding.
I realise it's not important in the grand scheme of things, but it really did smack of "ah, just give it to the lad who scored the most".

To be fair, scored 4 from play, made and scored two penalties and created Donaghy's goal all while being marked by the best corner back in the land.

On that note, what exactly would JOD have to have done for people to say Higgins was decorated?

Higgins didnt foul jod for the penalties .
Higgins blocking and tackling were exceptional. Jod relied heavily on donaghy for feeding.Moran relied on no one carried the hod himself.
Jod had a great match but Moran outshone i think.
I didnt expect Kerry to get this far cause i believed they had no leader. On Sat they had 3, Moran donaghy and o Se .

To be fair, I agree with you that Moran should have won MOTM. Having been on the ball 2.5 times more often than ANY Mayo player he was the outstanding player on the pitch in my eyes.

Just making the point re:JOD that I don't think picking him should automatically mean someone should be banned in future, he was very good!

Ah yeah, I was a little overboard, just thought it was a pity for someone like Moran not to get reocognised, JOD will have a stack of those awards piling up at home!

That seems very odd.Surely the players should have a choice .

I can imagine all the accusations of sexism that would be thrown around if camogie was part of the GAA and they had to wear skorts.

It's a bit disrespectful to cut off the speech although TV3 did something similar after last years Ulster final.

Marty Morrissey throwing the winks at the cork camogie women on rte 1 during the interview, throwing his "see you in copper face jacks smile" at Anna Geary, priceless :D

I've never been to a camogie match but I'm wondering what the average age of a camogie supporter would be? I had to turn down the volume of my TV when watching it today. All that of that high-pitched screaming seemed to resemble a One Direction concert (not that I've ever been to one of those either).

its a great day for kids because its an All Ireland final with easy to get and cheap tickets for children. Ladies football final will be similar in two weeks, lots of schools/underage clubs take buses to these finals

I thought the introduction to the players hotel was a bit off the mark and dated - Marty down there with all the girls etc...

Games were good though and some nice points scored.

The ladies want the place to themselves. Which is all fair enough. But they can't complain about the small gates. The interest amongst the majority of the general public simply isn't there.

Playing the Camogie final alongside the men's U21 would add some atmosphere to the occasion or even switching it to a smaller venue but it seems it has to be Croker or nowhere.

I'd agree. The main hurling counties are pretty much the main camogie counties also. Having the junior and intermediate final in Croke Park is great for those teams but really if it was on elsewhere it'd have the same crowd.

Meanwhile I think last night was the first time in years there was any kind of half decent crowd in Thurles for the u21. I know the sponsors of the u21 are based in Thurles or something like that but a bit of common sense would be helpful. The u21 was played before the camogie a few years ago. I think the attendances were ok but don't have figures. Maybe it was a case that the u21 final was taking away from camogie's big day?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,351 ✭✭✭✭Harry Angstrom

Perhaps having a double header of the camogie final and the ladies' football final on the same day might be a way forward? I mean, it would suit the Cork fans anyway :pac:

I know that, in reality, it would be difficult to do this as both codes are run by different organisations but at least it would add an extra bit of atmosphere to the respective occasions, and it would also mean that the All Ireland Hurling Final replay wouldn't be sidelined to a Saturday evening.

didnt one of the female analysists last night say they wanted to play before the mens or did i mishear her?

i assume she means before the senior all ireland (which will never happen) but i guess the real issue is that theres 3 ladies finals to be played, so i guess they need their own days. the u-21 final should definately have been played in Croke Park yesterday tho and it would have added another 16,000 to yesterdays crowd there perhaps.

the rest of them would be no different about their own counties had they won. imagine the s*ite being talked by Carney and Mcstay had Mayo won it?

you can be damn sure had kerry lost, the likes of mcstay and Brolly would have been sticking the knife in.

For the first time I've seen (may have been there for the drawn final) RTE made good use of some extra camera angles when showing replays of scores today. You can actually see the ball go over.

They used always have this camera angle behind the goal looking throw the netting and you could never tell at what point the ball passed the posts. First game I saw on Sky this year and straight away they made it much clearer with an over head angle that was above the netting that helped you see it better. A much needed change in my view.

Just came across this on youtube.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xjLS1CPXOGI

I had to laugh given the way the All-Ireland final game turned out with its over emphasis on hand passing.

I wonder does Pat still think rules limiting hand passing should be introduced?

From the second he says "35 scores, 33 from play", you know where we are going to go.

To equate a "great" game to the amount of scores is ham fisted analysis. Being a partial Fermanagh man (aeons back) I endured that match with Cavan. GASH, does not do it justice. But scores, are not a fully true reflection on how good or bad a game is. The same way that a HF not scoring a rake of points in a match isn't a straight up reflection on his contribution.

Anyway, in short, Spillane is a clown.
