Replacing Toshiba hard drive

Hi,

In the last few days I have started receiving warnings about the imminent failure of my hard drive. There is no obvious sign of a problem, i.e. no clicking or other funny sounds from the disk. It is a Toshiba Satellite Pro C660, only two-and-a-half years old and never been dropped or submerged in water. However, I am keeping everything backed up and am bracing myself for the day when the laptop finally crashes.

In the meantime, I am looking at the possibility of a replacement hard drive which I could fit myself. I am not technically qualified but it seems straightforward.

My only worry is the Windows 7 OS that came with the laptop. I don't have any CD so how would I transfer it on to the new disk if the worst happens?

I have the exact same laptop and my HDD is starting to fail also. Lots of failed boots etc. so I recently bought a SSD. I am going to remove my optical drive and install the SSD there. It will be used for my Windows OS and some other small applications. Below are a few links of the equipment I bought if your interested.

RE Windows OS. Backing up your data is the key thing here, you have that done already so you're good to go.
I am planning on shrinking my C Drive down as much as I can and then cloning it over to the SSD. People say a fresh install is better but I would rather keep my laptop exactly the way it is. I can always delete more junk in the future.

There are plenty of tutorials on youtube/reddit etc. so good luck.

Thanks for that. I'll probably go for a less ambitious solution if and when I need to. I will just need the same functionality.

You're right about the backup. That covers my original query.

From what I have seen on the Internet, Toshiba hard drives are not very good. I presume there are other compatible brands I can use?
