Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Right, so seeing Ronaldo and his oversculpted body made me think who the coolest players ever were.

It's not him. Some of you teenagers or 20 somethings may disagree with this but trust us older wiser people - he just tries too hard.

So the all time cool 11.

    Can't figure it myself but

    ???
    ???-???-???-Maldini
    ???-Alonso-???-???
    ???-Brian Mcbride

    Why Zvoni Boban of course.

For the remaining defensive position, maybe Passarella?

Demon of a player, and scored goals too.

    As player;

    Socrates without a doubt.

Dunno about some. I'm a massive Henry fan but he's guilty of trying too hard. Same with Cantona. Any ad campaign is a no no here.

Gerard might have made it but for the whole Phil Collins thing.

What about Zambrotta for the wing?

    Totti.
    Cannavaro.
    Stoichkov.
    Del Piero.
    Guardiola.
    Socrates.
    Henry.

Thats true, kind of rules out Ginola too I guess.

Roberto Baggio is an option as well.

Is Alonso a cool man's man? Never seen it myself.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,038 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

Oh, also, perhaps Olof Mellberg for his beard along with general manliness.

    And Luis Figo.

    Paul McGrath for Irish representation

Think Roy Keane would kind of qualify for this too.

Raul Meireles is far too cool.

    Right, my final attempt

    Lahm - Maldini - McGrath - Lizarazu
    Socrates - Pirlo - Alonso - Zambrotta
    McBride - Berbs

Cannavaro out on the basis of appearing in semi nude pictures looking a bit smug. Also he had a hair transplant.

Can't pick a goalie. Tempted to go for Chilavert just cause of the free kicks but that's not really the point.

I'm kind of thinking 'if my wife left me for a goalie, who would I be most OK about it being?

    Maybe Casillas?

    Buffon probably.

And Lahm isn't really cool. I'd plump for Javier Zanetti.

For goalkeeper, I'm putting forward Lev Yashin. Great keeper, and looked like an old school man's man.

    lev-yashin-football-192.jpg

Also had the best nicknames ever - The Black Panther, and The Black Spider.

    <edit> Also a 1 club man.

As a Gunner you are robbing Mr Bergkamp. His first touch and spin against Newcastle in 2002 was the best ever!

I don't know how to link to YouTube on the phone

Manager is a tough one, lots to choose from there, with my picks being Simeone and Trappatoni (perhaps a slightly younger version) each looking very cool in their own ways.

Fair point - both look cool. However, both can get very animated too but Del Bosque still stays cool even when all around are going baloobas.

    Bert Trautmann in goals.

Brought to England as a Prisoner of War, stayed afterwards to play for Man City.

Broke his neck during the FA Cup Final, could have been killed. Still played until the end and won the match, not a bother on him.

    Ruud Gullit
    Zidane
    George Best
    Stan Bowles ;

Mourninho during his first Chelsea reign would be my choice tbh.

Zlatan would get in there too I think....kicking teammates in the head etc, joker and ridiculously arrogant
Alonso is only in because he has a beard that never gets shaved.
