Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Wouldnt play Redondo either because he wouldnt cut his hair.

I thought Redondo refused to cut his hair, therefore he wasn't selected. does that make Redondo cool as sh1t,refused to cut his hair for "the man" and was prepared to miss a world cup because of it?

Same thing. Redondo wouldnt cut his hair so he wasnt picked.
Redondo was sh*t hot. Made the game look effortless. He's in my starting 11.

Not all hard men are cool, but all cool men are hard.

Think it was Iain Dowie I heard saying that.

Not all hard men are cool, but all cool men are hard.

Think it was Iain Dowie I heard saying that.

Thats why I wouldnt have the likes of Panucci, Totti, Giroud or Ginola in the team.

    Paul Breitner...now yer talking!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,828 ✭✭✭gosplan

Yeah, it's not clear what the OP is looking for. Some people are taking it to mean 'hardman' and others as 'suave'.

Roy Keane is a man's man but he's not cool as sh1t. David Ginola is cool as sh1t but he's not a man's man. There's too much of grey area.

Above XI is a good balance.

    Both.

The type of guy that of he wasn't a footballer would have a good shot at being a secret agent.

Not someone like Ronaldo who if he wasn't a footballer would be a hair stylist appearing on something like 'the only way is Maderia'

Pirlo, Alonso, Socrates etc - women want them and men want to be them.

Not many forwards fit the bill though. Guess their position demands that they be a bit less subtle and cool.

Alexi Lalas should be in there without a doubt. Crazy wild red hair, a Viking beard, quality side burns. He's the definition of "man's man cool as sh1t"!

    Edgar Davids for his glasses.

    Lalas, hmmm no way:

Nice to see a few remember the great and cool Socrates. He was nonchalance personified.

Concurrently took a doctorate in medicine while playing ... and being a heavy drinker and smoker.

An intellectual who protested against the military regieme and other inuustices.

And he could probably just as easily been a 70's porn star if he wanted.

He wins if it's about one guy.

I don't think there is much 'cool' in Paul McGrath considering his issues. He certainly doesn't fall into the Women want him, men want to be him category.

Pirlo and Berbatov are dead certs. Two of the coolest players ever to play the game.

this thread has become a bit of a thinly veiled "Footballers I fancy" thread.

    Pirlo is defo in so.

I'm leaving Berbatov out because in my opinion his nonchalant cool approach actually disimproves him on the pitch which is not cool at all.

    Van Basten or Battistuta?

Was trying to think of a few balkan lads that would fit the bill. First person that came into my head was Boban, then Dejan Savicevic. Cant belive I forgot Bilic! Those dead sunken eyes and chain smoking with the best of them. Could be up for the Manager spot!

    Edit: Nedved as well.

Anyone remember Pietro Vierchowod? He was a beast of a defender for Sampdoria back in the day.

Maradona had this to say about him

"He was an animal, he had muscles to the eyelashes. It was easy to pass by him, but then when I raised my head, he was in front of me again. I would have to pass him two or three more times and then I would pass the ball because I couldn't stand him anymore".

For English players, I always had great time for Matt Le Tissier as a player.

    Saner than Gazza
    More skillful than Waddle
None of the media BS of Beckham
Always looked like he had a few more gears in him that he could go into if he wanted
    Never worried about his appearance
Didn't worry about chasing big money moves
    47/48 from the Penalty Spot
    Was capable of pure magic

Also Maradona was cool as f***

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 2,562 ✭✭✭eyescreamcone

    Le Tiz
When the media were hounding him about a big money move. He came out with the line "what would I want with 5 grand a week". (today's equivalent 250k per week).
He stayed with the saints and kept them up on his own for years. Legend.

Henry is man's man cool ? When did that happen ?

My nomination is for the entire Red Star Belgrade team of '91. They played ball like it should be played and were mostly hard as nails. Choked in the final though.
