Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

If you had to pick the worst 11 players that were going to the world cup this year, what would you team look like?

(I will pop mine up later on when i get home)

I have no doubt this will turn into a "here's some players from a club I don't like" thread.

Unless you are going to include players you have never heard of from Honduras etc, it barely makes sense.

Charles Itandje, apparently, is now Cameroon's first choice goalkeeper.

    God help them.

Reading the comments below that video has shown me this. Very interesting.

Mwepu stated that “after the [Yugoslavia] match, he [President Mobutu] sent his presidential guards to threaten us. They closed the hotel to all journalists and said that if we lost 4-0 to Brazil, none of us would be able to return home.” When that context is taken into account, Mwepu’s previously unexplainable decision to smash the ball away before Brazil had taken it makes sense. Zaire were 3-0 down with five minutes to go. Mwepu and his teammates were looking to hold on to this scoreline and waste time however they could. “I panicked and kicked the ball away before he [Rivelino] could take it,” admitted the full back. “I shouted ‘you bastards!’ at them [the Brazil players] because they didn’t understand the pressure we were under.” His reaction is understandable – the Zaire players did not know if they would be able to return home, or if they did, they did not know what horrors they (or their families) might face. After all, they had already been threatened by the lackeys of their country’s despotic ruler, a man who was known to have those who displeased him kidnapped, tortured or killed. Mwepu’s moment of panic was, in truth, not the hilarious blooper moment it has been made out to be but the actions of a desperate man whose team had become the plaything of a capricious despot.

Ok so of the players I know, this is my eleven, mostly based on their club football this season:

GK- Orestis Karnezis (Greece- at fault for Bolivia pulling a goal back in a recent friendly, still not firm first choice in his squad)
CB-Diego Lugano (Uruguay- old, slow, has looked poor whenever I've seen him)
CB- Kolo Touré (Ivory Coast- Arsenal legend, but has had a fairly forgettable season)
CB- Chris Smalling (England- see their friendly vs. Ecuador)
RM- Antonio Valencia (Ecuador- not that he's that bad, but he really has had a muck season)
CM- Wilson Palacios (Honduras- doesn't get much of a run out at Stoke, but is one of the main men for the national team)
CM- John Obi Mikel (Nigeria- how did he become a professional footballer?)
CM- Nabil Bentaleb (Algeria- why did Sherwood insist on picking him over waaaaay more qualified alternatives?)
LM- Ashkan Dejagah (Iran- part of Fulham's season to forget)
ST- Jozy Altidore (USA- see his entire season for evidence)
ST- Park Chu Young (South Korea- Arsène Wenger's mystery buy)

    .....and here we go.

    Obi Mikel?
    Altidore?
    Antonio Valencia?
    Kolo Toure?

You haven't the fist notion if you think these are the worst players in the world cup.

To be fair, I did say it's of those that I've heard of, obviously there are plenty worse. These are just the sort of 'big name under performers'.

Have you only heard of about 30 players? Come on now.

Kim for south korea is a bit sh1t. Not that one, the other one. No, the other one...

Worst WC winners might be more fun.

As has been said, this will be just a load of Iran and Honduras players.

    I'll put forward some nominations:

    Bernard Diomede
    Stefan Guivarch
    Kleberson

They're generally the exact opposite of "under performers" for their country actually. All of them, (bar maybe Toure, as all of the Ivory Coast players generally under perform) have generally played very, very well for their country.

Kleberson was actually pretty good for Brazil and was a decent enough player before his move to United.

Torres has to be up there.

Fernando Torres? Seriously? Worst striker you have ever seen at a world cup?

Toure was probably our best defender for the first half of the season.

Bentaleb is a decent young midfielder, nowhere near the worst player I have seen even in 5 games so far.

Dejegah from what I saw was one of the better Fulham players this season.

How you can even question Mikel as being a professional footballer is just incredible. He is absolutely of Premier League quality.

North Korea from the last world cup with a strike partnership of Clinton Morrison and David Connollly to top it off

Welbeck and Obi Mikel are ridiculous inclusions.

In any case this is a stupid thread, there aren't many players at the world cup who could be described as really poor. You don't get to play at that level unless you've been doing something right. Look at Costa Rica the other night with a bunch of unheralded players who took on and beat one of the supposedly better teams in the competition.

I think Most of the team for the worst world cup XI picks itself:
    Hart

    Johnston Cahill Jagielka Baines

    Henderson Gerrard

The rest are up for grabs:D

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

He is absolutely shocking there are pictures of him leaning against a goal post chilled when a corner is just about to come in!

I thought in Obi Mikels defence he did a solid job against Argentina though most of it was not the defensive side of his play.
