Met a lovely girl from the Netherlands today who was here on work experience. Unfortunately she got mugged around Poleberry (Just across from the end of bunkers hill) today. She was knocked over from behind by a guy on a skateboard and his friend picked up her bag and they legged it off together. She says the bag was a cheap black leather hand bag, but contained a memory card with all the pictures of her time in Ireland, as well as new clothes she'd bought in Cork today (2 shirts and a blouse) her purse with €60 in it (presumably taken) and her bank cards ect. The guys probably dumped the bag soon after taking the valuables out so if anyone knows anything or came across the bag please get in touch with me. She's leaving in two weeks and it'd be lovely to reunite her with her memory card at least so she doesn't leave Ireland with a bad impression of us :) PLEASE SHARE IN WATERFORD

It's a dose! Would hate the girl to leave our country with that kind of impression of Waterford.

Was in the Guard station with her, they said they checked the cctv and didn't see anything but they'd go over it again later so fingers crossed!

Am I the only cynic? Lets have a whip round or a benefit night!

Lol, no one wants a whip round. She seemed more upset about her memory card than anything else.

Sorry to hear about your friend, hope the memory card will be found. I am finding Waterford is really unsafe lately, I had a friend who got mugged as well around Polberry , same thing happened to her and she ended up in
hospital, it was two months ago in the afternoon. i am avoiding Waterford only comes to the city if I cannot find what I am looking for somewhere else which is a pity.

The Gardaí were chatting to a dubious looking character this morning at 7:00am on Upper Yellow Road.
You've got to hand it to them!

I know muggings happen in Waterford but come on ffs there is crime everywhere in the world. No matter where you are in the world you always need to be careful and try to be safe, Waterford is a really safe city and to say you wont come to the city cause is dangerous it's a bit stupid. Do you not leave your house in the morning in case you get hit by a car?

It is a shame though that someone who was over visiting the country has had this happen to her and I hope that the people get caught and she gets her stuff back.

I know there is crime everywhere but since I am in equal driving distance to
Waterford and Kilkenny, I choose Kilkenny over Waterford for shopping as I feel the streets are safer. I never had any hassle in Kilkenny but had a few in Waterford.

Fair point. Lots of people feel the same now. Waterford is an incredibly bad place to live/get work/visit.

Hard for some people to accept that it seems.

Jeez man get a grip, pawn shops have been around forever.

That's why you need ID to sell to places like that.

And don't forget the shop is the one losing money if the Gardai take back a stolen item, so it's not really in their interest to be buying stolen goods.

I wonder how many stolen ipods or laptops end up on adverts.ie, where there are no identity checks?

Jeez nothing. How could the Pawn shop know if it was stolen up the country a couple of months ago? Im sure plenty end up on the other sites aswell. Never said they didnt.

Was there a Facebook page set up for the girl? A mate told me there was after reading this but I can't find it.

I try not get involved with debates like this, but that's a ridiculous post. You cannot make sweeping statements like that.
Waterford is not a bad place to live visit or work.
They are the most friendliest approachable people in Ireland, every city has a few bad apples so on your basis the other 4 cities would be unliveable in

Yeah great place to work. Thriving economy it is.

Sorry i was miles off. Your right. Every 2nd thread in the Waterford city section is wrong. Waterford is a really great place to get work.

Well what exactly were you implying with your "not a coincidence that shops like this boom during times like these..." line?

That they're somehow helping or encouraging scum to get rid of stolen goods?

Not saying that they set up shop exclusively to receive them but its an easy place to get rid of an Xbox, Power tool or some other generic good that cant be tracked. If a pawn shop takes in a drill or PS3 that was stolen up in Longford 3 months ago how can they track it?

Also dont get me started on Cash4Gold. You really think that when a house is burgled and Jewellery taken that theres a burglar somewhere dressed like MrT who hordes Gold. Where do you think they flog gold?

I heard that there was an attempted mugging along The Quay during the week where the mugger was
caught by a group of bystanders & promptly dealt with. Not in the best of condition but behind bars.
    Well done to all concerned.

Christ, id say you are some buzz out for a few pints, why dont you head off out of Waterford then.
My experience is most people who slag off Waterford at every opportunity have never lived anywhere else. usually scared witless to leave.

I've worked Waterford and Kilkenny city centers, same amount of issues in both, but it was up to 5 years ago, my friend still working in both have told me drug related crime has increased in both places.

I had a hairy experience in Amsterdam years ago and it does colour your view of a place, contrast that with a peaceful month spent in other Dutch cities.

get a grip----thousands of people shop and socialise in Waterford city every day of the week with no hassle or problems.....the negativity about Waterford city on this forum is unreal!!! pathetic!!! p.s. don't even start me on the drivel that appears in the papers every week....they seem to thrive on bad news and misery!

True thing. The world is a more dangerous place than it used to be when walking the streets. Sad but true. Waterford is just like any place in that regard. It's certainly not the hell hole that some of the tiresomely predictable buzz wrecks like to trot out here whenever they get a chance.

I'd love to leave Waterford and never come back. But, that's purely because I'd love to live in the sun and never be cold as any Aussie would. Other than that, Waterford is pretty much as safe as any other place I've lived.

Trolling? Remind me again what state the economy is in? Does Waterford not have the highest unemployment rate in the country? So its trolling now to point that out. Good man.
