Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I presume you're referring to the TV licence. Do you watch everything RTE produce? You've technically paid for all of it
And a good deal of it I have been quite vocally opposed to, while in many areas I am not the target audience so it is not a point for me to argue on personally. But their football "punditry" is one of them most glaring examples of celebrating wilful ignorance and celebrating it, to the extent of it actually being bad for the sport in this country.

I still don't understand why you insist on watching it when you've freely admitted that if ITV or BBC were available you'd be watching them regardless of the fact that you've paid for RTE and are a member of the target audience.

Because almost anything is preferable to RTEs coverage when Dunphy is on, it's quite simple really. And I don't have an option whether or not I pay for RTE so long as I own a TV.

Given the option of ITV, BBC or RTE with two or three of Sadlier/Cunningham/Hamann or Ossie/Friedel, I would pick RTE. Especially with Darragh over Bill. Yet RTE persist with the clownish Old Boys Club as per usual more often than not.

Anyone notice that Ossie has vanished?

So basically your silly problem is just Dunphy.
He is the most entertaining person on Irish tv.
    Just stop your crying!!!!

Giles always tried to cut Bill off when hes moving on to another point, some kind of stubborn mental reflex

Dunphy says the WC should always be played in Europe.

Please. This has been the best WC in forever. Wouldn't have been 1/10th as good in Europe.

Then Billo says 2 mins later. " They hadnt got much magic there in the first half, Holland."

Bear in mind Billo scolded Eamon and Giles the last time the dutch played, for saying Holland!

Pardon my ignorance but what is the difference between the two names?

That's more down to the attacking attitude of a lot of teams rather than because it's in Brazil, they do have a point though it shouldn't be in a place where the temperature is extreme.

Holland is simply a provence of The Netherlands, like Leinster is to Ireland.

Holland is generally just the western part of the country. So if there are any Dutch taking "offence", which there are very few, they will be from the north, east or south.

But those were just shouting Hup Holland Hup a couple of hours ago as well.

It is really a non issue (in Holland*), dont know why they make such a fuss about it.

    *See what i did there

Did a memo go round RTE to only call them the Netherlands ? Both Giles and Dunphy have called them Holland and then corrected themselves to the Netherlands. Over on ITV they're still called Holland. Much ado about nothing on RTE it seems.

    +1

Also, being in Brazil the match times are perfect for us.

5pm and 9pm kick offs (our time) are ideal.

Even the 11pm games in the group stages were good.

I enjoyed the novelty of late night football !

Just as well kick off suits European audience times, imagine the stuff coming out of a Drunken Dunphy at 2 o clock in the morning!

Wouldn't it be a lot easier if they just called them 'The Dutch' ?

What kind of a screwed up place is it anyway?

    It's called The Netherlands.
The fans go 'Hup Holland Hup'.
    And the people are Dutch.
None of the names bear any resemblance to each other.

I should know as I lived there for a while but my mind was on other things then.

Used to think the same until this world cup. Better punditry from the Cunningham/Hamann/Sadlier trio has shown up his shortcomings as a pundit no end. A ****stirrer, one of if not the best.

The players are clearly feeding of the crowds and atmosphere, which wouldn't be as good in Europe.

Him Ronnie Whelan and Jim Beglin and Lawro and Hansen hate football. Seriously hate it.

I wonder if they're all bitter about the fact that when they were playing they weren't on the ridiculous wages that came in during the mid-late 90's and this just comes out in their punditry.

Hamilton makes another tenuous 1990 reference this time adding the assumption that "we all remember what happened then", unaware that a vast amount of his audience were either too young to remember or not even born then.

As did I, but in general the games were scheduled to suit a European audience. Not ideal staging matches at 1 pm in the Amazon jungle. But if the matches were on in the evening Brazilian time, they would have been on very late in the night European time.

You'd swear Italia '90 was the only time a penalty shoot out was ever taken before.

I laughed at that too. We were in one in 2002 too.
