Derelict sites in upper main street, empty premises all over the place. Place looks rough as hell. Barely a soul to be seen. This place is a shambles and embarrassing place to life.

You'll find it's the same in many towns.

Travel up to Dun Laoghaire and you'll see that - I was down in Kilkee and it was the same......

If the place is looking down at heal, get involved with the Tidy Towns committee and help paint the place up a bit, particularly the derelict sites. It's amazing what a bit of paint and some flowers will do to make it look better.

    Good suggestion.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Have done...for many years...but the wills not there from many but existing shop owners need to do some painting themselves as well. There needs to be more will from people in the town to do something. Council need a new plan or some plan.

    I hear ya....

Do you guys have a festival on down there? might be an idea to tie in the festival and a morning of sprucing the place up.

Wicklow is the same re. alot of closed business and empty shops but somehow the main street always looks lovely. It's a pleasure to stroll around in Wicklow.

Whereas in Arklow you just want to avoid the main street if at all possible because a) there's nothing in it and b) it looks terrible.

Something needs to be done - tidy towns could at least paint a few shop fronts and put hanging baskets around. It helps hugely to the look / atmosphere of a place.

Considering it used to be called stab city of Wicklow or the drug capital of Wicklow what would you expect of the town. Its one town I hate going through but that's all I'd ever do, I'd never stop in it

You do realise that Tidy Towns people are all volunteers? They have no obligation to do anything.

I didn't say they were obliged. What I said was they could at least paint a few of the shop fronts or put out hanging baskets.

That's what's called 'making a suggestion'. No-one's obligated to do anything in this World.

As far as I can tell, there has been painting done. The old cinema, doctors surgery and other places of business that are now closed have had a lick of paint. So I don't see how criticism is warranted there.

I'm sure they'd be delighted to have you help them out.

I don't live in Arklow and don't frequent the town anymore. I'm a Wicklow woman. I was only making a suggestion and not sure where the unwarranted jibes are coming from.

I'd like to see Arklow turnaround. I went to school down there but it doesn't have the same draw for me anymore.

You do know it's by-passed? There is no need for you to go near it if you hate the town that much

lol who called it that? I'd say there's more stabbing in Bray, and I know the drugs are nothing in comparison to Wicklow

No, it did not used to be called Stab City. I have never heard that before in my life.

It's not THAT bad, come on.

I did say "used to be". In the time of the tunnel it certainly was.I'm not talking about knives. Of a Friday night there, you were guaranteed of at least one assault with a broken bottle.

Likewise with the drugs. Every weekend there was multiple patients doing in to loughlinstown from drugs

What? I don't know what kind of Arklow you're talking about but growing up there, going to school there and socialising there back in the day I never came across any of what you're describing. You're painting an awful picture of the town.

Bad for drugs alright. You're not wrong there.

Leave Bray out of it. Another Wicklow town with an undeserved reputation. For a town that is the 9th largest in the state after Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Galway, Waterford, Swords, Dundalk and Drogheda we have measurably lower crime rates per capita than all but Galway. Even during the Summer the Seafront quarter is now gentrified after Dublins Finest decided to hold their Riots in Howth and Portmarnock instead the last 8 years.

So you never seen near riots in arklow on a Saturday night in the tunnel. They were a weekly occurrence. There was always a bottle broke over a head in there

No. No, I did not ever see 'near riots' in Arklow.

    Are you a local?

    Jaysus you obviously have some kind of issue with Arklow. If I may make a couple of points;
When the tunnel was on the go it was the only nightclub in Arklow so it was only natural that late night/weekend anti social behaviour was going to be concentrated there.
If I had the inclination to do so I could post similar links to any nightclub past or present in Ireland.
I used to frequent the tunnel a fair bit back in the day and I never witnessed a near riot as you say.
    I think the issue you have with Arklow is one of two things;
You are either trolling or someone dumped you/ turned you down in the Tunnel:D
Anyway, back on topic, seems to be a bit of work going on at the site of the old Dunnes, good to see.....

Wrong on both accounts. Neither trolling nor dumped. Basically backing up my arguement of the drug and stab opinion.

I dealt with the victims in a professional capacity weekly.

I'm only using the tunnel as an example but if you look at my links various locations around the town are mentioned.

There is 3 night clubs in wicklow town and they are never mentioned.

Likewise when cleauseos was on the go which you probably frequented more often barry.

Same answer, you could say the same about any club in the country!
Are you saying there was no problem with cleauseos? REALLY?

Where are the three nightclubs in Wicklow? I can only think of the Fordge.
    I could be wrong..

I'm saying there was no problem with serious assaults and drugs in Ashford.

Prob a bad arguement with wicklow as Ashford was the main venue then the tunnel was going but there are actually 2. Silvers is closed.

Forge and whistlers i think it's called.

It's going to be the new library/municipal offices.

"The library will be over two floors towards Main Street, while the new Municipal Offices will comprise two floors on the Castle Park side of the building.
Construction will take approximately one year and, when completed, the building will be the flagship civic building of Wicklow County Council."

Should bring a good deal of footfall to the Main Street. Might be the boost it needs.....
