He was widely regarded as England's future CB and captain, having forged an impressive partnership for the u21 national side with Jones.

He was being gently broken into Fulhams first team, but I can assure you, as someone who actually has a fond interest in seeing UK pundits, journalists and oaches big up the next big thing to see them fall by the wayside, Smalling was being touted as a first choice CB for the next decade.

Now he's looking at questions of his inclusion in squads : /

Think your a little confused Jones was the one touted as the future England captain, Smalling very much came out of the blue and dropped out of the Fulham side after we agreed a deal for him.

Jones didn't get called up for the u21s till after Smalling signed for us. So there's no way they could have formed a good partnership before Smalling signed for us.

"I've played with Chris for three or four years in the England Under-21s and also at United, and we have a really good understanding," he told reporters.

I could be mixing up some of the underage levels, but it's definitely being flaunted about how the pair caused a stir in the underage setups as a future CB pairing for England
Your making no sense you said he was heralded as the best cb in England despite playing 13 games in two seasons at Fulham now he was being gently broke in. Which is it?

Why are you questioning me as if I made the claim? My point is discussing how typically English players get a hype train, with little to no evidence supporting it, and it falls way short of expectations.

I'd be very much in agreeance with you, in that there was very little to suggest Smalling could or would be a star English CB, whilst he was being gently integrated into the Fulham side.

He was very much receiving gentle exposure at Fulham being brought in gradually, as he was had just come up from practically nowhere.

He was frequently being touted as one of England's best young CB's whilst at Fulham, and expectations where he would be one of two CB's for a decade.

I'm not saying ths is my view, it's not. I'm just telling you what was said about these young players, the expectations. I know me, and you, might not see it. It's a mostly English thing, I'm sure few Irish people would buy into it.

I'm just trying to point out how there is a certain amount of hype that builds for every young English player, that in more cases then not, fizzles out into nothing more then being a "decent" footballer.

By the way, this is what planted the seed in my head for the points I raised throughout the day, it's so blatantly obvious, but just simply get's overlooked. Rarely to never does an English player reach the potential outlined for them, compared to other "big" footballing nations.

Official: Zenit have signed Benfica and Argentina defender Ezequiel Garay for €6(!) million.

And we were going to pay over £20 million for him:eek::eek:

Ridiculous, we were linked with same player for 20 Million but he is sold for 6 Million Euro which is around 4.8 Million pounds.

    Actually that's not true.

    Jan Hagen ‏@PortuBall 2m
Sorry, guys. Not my intention to trick you. I blame this on Benfica's statement. €15m is Garay's fee. Not €6m.

    Jan Hagen ‏@PortuBall 6m
€6m is of course Benfica's cut of Garay's transfer. They only own 40% of his rights. Real Madrid own 50%. Third-party 10%. €15m in total.

But I agree with you though about not believing transfer rumors. No one had a clue about Herrera.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,986 ✭✭✭Spazdarn

Still we should have been putting our hat in for him, even if we paid a Utd tax...

Just backs up my point though really. If we'd believed he had gone for €6m we'd look like a pair of assholes right now. ;)

Yeah but no one reported 6 Million fee. The one who did it clarified it as 6 Million is what Benfica got. Just a small confusion.

Yeah re rumors, some people react to every single news no matter who and which paper reports it.

Considering how under the radar the Herrera business was, would anyone be surprised if Kroos was signed once the WC is over?

Yeah maybe you are right. Thinking about it a tackling midfielder is more likely.

We're getting herrera who looks like a good box to box midfielder which is what we need!

Yeah they're both attainable and would definitely add to the first team.

Surprised not to see Alexis Sanchez linked with United, given our lack of quality options on the flanks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,909 ✭✭✭Neeson

No way sure isn't DeJong too hard and just not good enough. You missed the memo.

Disagree, exactly what we need in the middle of the park. He is also a better footballer than people give him credit for.

    highly highly unlikely to happen...

he might've signed half the dutch team for us

imagine they win the world cup and all reveal united jersies and squad numbers at the end of the match...LVG with a big smug s***eating grin on his face going...

Your move engineer and special one....

A defender who can't defend verses a winger who can't beat a defender. Jaysus, which level of uselessness will override the other? :pac:

Now your talking about him being hyped up to be the next big thing which is a totally different thing. Every young player that looks good is the next superstar and how many succeed to that potential very very few.
Fulham had only recently signed Smalling from a non league side when united bought him. Very few people had even heard of him. But have to agree that he needs to kick on this season, him and Jones. Really think players like them will prosper under LVG.

When smalling had a little run at cb beside vidic a few seasons back he looked absolutely superb. Looked like him and vidic were becoming the first choice pairing. Then vidic got injured.

Reckon smalling has the most potential of our cbs.

I think Evans has shown more out of the 3 when he was given a run.

Think Evans has shown the most promise myself. Playing Smalling and Jones at RB has held them back a lot imo. They will never be proper right backs. Unless Varela is ready, I think signing a RB is very important this summer also.

    Agree totally Mitch.

he is awful FB but then again you put Rio or Vidic there and im sure they have been the same.

Smalling is a CB and a very good one with potential to be excellent.
