I know because of recent spendings United are linked with nearly everyone but there's talk of Andre Ayew from Ghana joining. I think he's out of contract in Marseille this year and has said he wants to join the Premiership.

Would he be a good fit?

    The secret of his longevity!

I think we've done well to avoid African players so far. In my opinion players going off to the ACN at a crucial stage of the season every two years has cost teams trophies in the past and we should avoid that situation until it changes.

Very good point didn't even think about the ACN!

If Ayew is out of contract it would be stupid to not try sign him.

Although personally I think Rafael is a bit of a liability it seems many fans and critics think he's the way to go at RB. If Janmaat comes in we can pretty much say that means he will start and I can't see Rafael settling for a back up spot after being a starter for a while now.

Would like to see Marnick Vermijl pushed up and get some games, was very good on his loan spell last year in NEC despite their relegation.

LVG will love Rafael he is a nutter and is brilliant going forward. He is not the best defensively but he is better at it then most people give him credit for. He was very good two seasons ago and injuries and Moyes set him back last season. I expect him to flourish under LVG. But i think a good rb for competition is needed.

De Jong is a bit of a c**t but he is exactly what we need in midfield. I was at milan v Juve in the San Siro the season before last and De Jong was absolutley sensational. He kept Juve out on his own. The amount of blocks and tackles he made during the game was incredible. Look at how easy teams walked through us last year. A bus could have been driven through our midfield at times. If he was available cheap he would definitely be worth picking up.

De Jong would be perfect to sit back and break up play to allow Rafael and Shaw bomb down the flanks. I would really like him been awhile since we had somebody who has battling qualities in the midfield.

Get a proper DM and we dont need to worry about Raf going forward. Im a big fan of Raf, he will be like a new signing under LVG

    Vidal.
    In a United jersey.

Get him and centre back in and that would be a better summer than I'd ever hoped might happen.

Have you got a link to a post of mine where I lauded Keane as a club great?

Because I think you're confusing my opinion with some imaginary collective consciousness of all Man United fans.

Yes we all must have imagined that Keane was a legend for United. Even more worrying, the top midfielders in the world at the time, must have also imagined Keane was a great player when they lauded him with praise.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,171 ✭✭✭dor843088

I look on de Jong much as I do on Suarez -- he's a [insert name that would get me a yellow card]. He's broken at least one leg (maybe two IIRC?) and committed gbh in the world cup final. I don't like the idea of him being in a United shirt.

Guess youd have gotten rid of keane and cantona after their first infractions then? Id love to see dejong in a utd shirt . As bill cullen said " im lookin for a warrior "

De Jong would give great freedom to our full backs. If you look at Baines and Coleman attacking for Everton, either Mccarthy or Barry drop back to make up the numbers in defence whereas last season Evra was going forward and nobody was covering the space . I think LVG could go with 3 centre halves and leave Rafael and Shaw attack all they want. I d prefer that to having Young and Valencia as our wide men.

Would be a strange one though with the new contract and Buttner gone.

Evra + Nani + cash for Vidal.

That's crazy enough that it just might work :-D

    1. Would need us to get another lb then.

    2. Hope that the Valencia contract isn't the end of that story :P

Who'll cover LB then? Evra, Nani to Juve and Vidal to United plus Blind?

If Evra does go then surely that means Daley Blind will be brought in. Can play LB or CM, two birds with one stone effectively.

    Mark Ogden ‏@MOgdenTelegraph 38m
Final figure on Luke Shaw to Man Utd is £27m plus a £1m incentive based add on. Still a fair whack for a teenager...

Daily Star think Utd are close on Vermaelen.

Corriere Dello Sport think Utd are close on De Vrij. Reason they care is Lazio were after De Vrij too.

A CB will more than likely be the next signing it seems.

Could be wrong but I don't see Evra leaving in the summer, he knew well before he signed the extension that United were pursuing Shaw and had said he was ready to step in to a mentor role for the young lad. Might change his mind but I see him staying at least until January

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,219 ✭✭✭✭Pro. F

De Jong is a horribly overrated player. Since he's calmed down with the silly tackles people have been talking him up again, but he's still very limited. Okay defensively, although weak enough positionally for Milan at times this season (that could be just down to their poor management), can occasionally hit a nice pass so he catches the eye. But his control is rubbish for CM at the level we want to be at. We shouldn't go near him.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 18,424 Mod ✭✭✭✭DM_7

Ayew has another year to go on his contract, if he didn't he would already have signed a pre contract like Vidic did.

I would prefer a better player but United only have the EPL next seaeon so he would be good enough for next season at least. I don't think he is over rated as I think people generally see him as a good player but not more.

    Not at all.

I'll summarise then. I said I didn't want de Jong. Someone else (presumably not a United fan) said something like "how can you say you don't want de Jong when you laud Keane as a great at the club", which suggests either all United fans don't want de Jong (not true;it seems to be just me) or I'd been lauding him. I hadn't; I hadn't said anything about Keane. You seem to think I did. You missed the point of the conversation :)

He would be good enough in the way that Joe Hart would be good enough. De Jong is an average player who posters in this thread are talking about being good. That would count as overrating him imo. It's not like better players than him would be hard to sign, no need to waste a squad place on an average player.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,136 ✭✭✭✭Rayne Wooney

I think signing De Jong would be just for a big name when we could get a player who is better but less known

    It's a lazy signing

I wouldn't mind Schneiderlin if we're going for a defensive minded midfielder, seeing as it looks like he will be part of the Southampton exodus

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,721 ✭✭✭Al Capwned

The reason I wasn't totally against the idea of de Jong signing is that he would represent an improvement on the options we have in that area of the field.

That said, I haven't really watched him a lot for Milan, and am basing my opinion on his PL performances a few years ago, and those for The Netherlands more recently. I would imagine a lot (maybe) of posters would be doing the same.

Now in light of the Herrara signing, and the links with Vidal, (who I have watched a lot of, and I would love to see in OT), it seems that we are in for a higher calibre of player, and that is to be welcomed...

Also, I'll bow to Pro.F's knowledge of his performances for Milan recently, and taking all of this into consideration I've changed my mind. I don't want to see him signed.

I want to see better players than him.

Why would it be an 18 though? is it a porn? is that why it says coming this August?

Also, Mata shouldn't be that tall.

Our performances last season were X rated so 18 might be appropriate

Nigel De Jong was by far Milan's best player this year. He's more than the hack merchant that he's made out to be. He would be a great short term signing for us. With a young CB group we should be looking to protect them as much as possible. De Jong is a very disciplined player positionally and can offer a lot to a team that is looking to transform itself going forward with a new identity. He'd also give more freedom to the attacking players and is a fantastic worker without the ball.

I'd love to see it happen.

As I said I would prefer a better player so we agree there at least.

If he was signed I would look at him as a player van Gaal knows, that he wouldn't be expensive maybe freeing up funds for other players, he wouldn't get in the way of a new signing down the line, bringing some bite (lol) to midfield and that United only have domestic football next season so not everything needs fixing this summer then I wouldn't be disappointed to see him signed now that Herrera is already on board.

I think you've got him spot on Pro. Even without CL football next season there are better players out there that would (i'd imagine) be within a reasonable chance of getting. That is that if LVG and co are looking into a midfielder to break things up. I'd rather have Lassana Diarra than De Jong, though I do think he would be a stopgap as well with others LVG may be looking into.

Good player imo, as of the last time I saw him anyway. But he's the second coming of Nicholas Anelka for transfer shenanigans.

I would like Kroos as he can play defensive midfielder with his excellent tackling, top class passing and great ball distribution.

I don't know if true, currently I am not ITK, but it has been reported LVG contacted him about wanting him.

Just imagine this three in midfield...

    Kroos

    Vidal
    Herrera

    With these in front....

    ----Mata
    Rooney
    RVP

    Premier league title....

If we are not going to be able to get a high end CM to go with Herrera, I think our best option would be Schneiderlin. Though it probably isn't as likely at all now that they have sold Lambert, Shaw and by Monday surely Lallana as well.

Wouldn't be trusting Kroos at DM at all though. Carrick is still our guy there next year.

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,155 ✭✭✭✭JRant

I can't to see what LVG can do with Jones.

Honestly think he can turn him into a top quality DM. He's had some MOTM performances there for us in the past and I think with a few technical tweaks to his game and a top class baller in CM he could surprise alot of people.

"Well, yeah, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man"

Carrick is a very limited player these days. We need to moving on from the days of him being a main man in there. He slows the play down when the ball is played to him.
