Ronnie looks a bit stern or angry tonight..

He regrets spending all that money on his wig, with Liam and Richie being bravely bald alongside him.

Thing is if the game went 2 0 before half time this would be very different. Energetic playing won the day.

Spain looked shattered. Chile could very well do them.

Wonderful display by the Dutch. Completely bypassed the Spainish midfield and got at a very mediocre backline.

    Great game of football really.

It was a strange game really. I thought the Dutch weren't even in the game until they scored. Once they did, they were rampant. Not sure they are as good as they looked tonight though.

I actually fancied Spain for this tournament. Don't now why really. Not sure they can recover from this.

Flicked over to the RTE panel, ah God bless them, the result must be killing them. Lets look for every excuse under the sun and not state the obvious - Spain were outplayed and outclassed tonight.

Good point in fairness. You have to remember a lot of these lads were contesting a CL final just a few weeks ago.

fact from fifa website: The last time Spain conceded at least 5 goals was in 1963 when they were defeated in Madrid 6-2 by Scotland.

Absolute shocker tonight but really enjoyed the dutch goals

Big mistake taking off Alonso and bringing on Torres at 2-1 down....bad call

  • Just watched that Robben goal again. The man is nearly 30 and his speed and acceleration is still unbelievable.

I thought they would be in their element. Don't they always go on about how bad Spain's defence is? Especially Ramos.

Before the final whistle sounds in Salvador, Del Bosque goes down the line and, to a man, thanks his players. A gentleman to the end. A style implemented by Luis Aragones following quarter final heartache against France in the quarter finals of the World Cup 2006, it's a style fraught with risk and danger, a style that can only be utilized with a certain kind of player. When it works, it is football at its purest form, the best kind of football. When it doesn't work, it will collapse, often with more spectacular results than other brands of football, by nature it is fraught with risk.

What does Del Bosque do now? Up until David Silva misses the chance to put Spain 2-0 ahead this was a football masterclass, an orchestra of flowing, one touch football. To say that Xavi, Iniesta, Silva ect. can't do it, the first half of that game suggests otherwise entirely. The problems arose after the Dutch equaliser. The pressing disappeared and the back four and goalkeeper became a bumbling shambles, Ramos and Pique, arguably Spain's two best players in Euro 2012, have never been worse than tonight. Casillas, far from having a calming effect on his team, seemed to put everyone, himself included, on edge.

What is in Del Bosque's favour is that he has the players to change. Whether he will change his entire shape in the middle of a tournament is another thing but the option for a double pivot, the option to bring in Koke, the option to bring in Martinez, these options are all available to the Spanish coach. It all may not be enough, so devastating is the goal difference following that game. The nature of the defeat, the lack of fight and hunger after going behind, the style, a style fraught with risk, these have all contributed to the heavy, and potentially decisive margin of the defeat.

Much like when the national team was defeated in 2006 by an aging French side and it became clear that something needed to happen, Luis Aragones emerged as an inspirational figure, Pep Guardiola emerged as an inspirational figure. For Barcelona, for Spain, for football in it's purest form, we can only hope that Luis Enrique emerges as such an inspirational figure.

The first half was a bit meh, but then...

Unbelievable performance by the Dutch, helped in party some horrible goalkeeping and defending in general but what an insane result.

Be interesting to see what Del Bosque does in the next game?
Does he drop some of the players who brought so many titles to Spain?
Do they even have the players? Fabregas and Mata have been left go by clubs. Do Spain have anyone to play at centre half?
Xavi, Pique and Casillas were poor.

I love this logic. Mata let go by Chelsea= worse player, Fabregas signed by Chelsea= worse player.

Well if they were top class those clubs would not be letting them go.

To be honest the midfield wasnt that bad.
It was all the striker costa and defence as well as gk.
Costa was playing very poor from the start, a whole different player that we see when he plays with athletico. He is usually more agressive and determimed.
Xavi Iniesta Silva and Bus were quite good in fairness they all had their share of tackles shots and chances.
But then again they were MUSCLED out so I think koke would be a good choice. Mata is not an option for me.
Maybe 2 strikers up instead of only 1 ?

They got a bad beating tonight but they lost their first game four years ago against the Swiss although they did dominate that game.

Players being let go by clubs means nothing, this is international football.

Del Bosque can change the who style and complexion of this team if he chooses. At GK he can bring in De Gea or Reina. At CB he can bring in Javi Martinez who for me is their best CB and Albiol had a great season too, at full back he can bring in Juanfran and switch Azpilicueta if he wishes.

In midfield he can go back to one defensive midfielder and leave either Busquests or Xabi Alonso in and then bring in Koke and Fabregas and get rid of one of Xavi, Silva and Iniesta if he pleases. He could also bring Javi Martinez in there in defensive midfield if he wanted to.

He still has Villa and Santi Cazorla is there too along with Mata and Torres.

Its a great panel and it will be interesting to see how they get on the next day.

I think the biggest problem for that team is older players tiring in the heat. They just fell apart in the last 20 minutes.

A lot of the guys there don't play CH. Martinez wouldn't be quick. It is centre half that they are in real trouble. They also lack pace in the centre of midfield.
Do Atletico have centre halves in the Spanish squad?

Martinez is quick for a CB, he has played DM at a high level. He is world class in either position.

The don't need pace in the centre because they pass the ball so well. They have one of the best DMs in the world in Busquests. Alonso and Xavi didn't do well in the second half and thats age I think.

Busquets is very good in fairness. I had a look there at the Spanish squad and they really dont have much options at centre half. Chile with Sanchez will run at them.
I cant see Del Bosque making too many changes. Where he needs to change he doesnt have the players in those areas. Costa would probably benefit from more crosses coming in and Pedro would be an option. Would give them some pace too.

The time for change was after the Confederations Cup last season when the glaring flaws in the team were exposed.
Del Bosque continued to stubbornly saunter on .
I knew the writing was on the wall when a full strength Spanish side struggled against a bum second string Irish side last summer .

Xavi is a shadow of the player he was ,he has no pace anymore and plays too deep.
Busquets has come off a terrible season,he was a liability tonight and himself and Alonso dont work in the same team.
You either play Xavi or Aonso ,not both ,both are too slow and immobile to play together.

Pique has lost the plot since he hooked up with Shakira ,he was dreadful tonight ,himself and Ramos have no pace and were brutally exposed.
Alba at left back was anonymous too ,looked like a headless chicken and Azpilucueta wasnt much better ,Carvahal should have been in the squad and on the pitch.

I dont see Spain progressing now ,the core players in the team are exhausted ,they have had 1 summer off in 7 years and they look shattered .
They should have sent a second string to the Confederations Cup last summer and given the rest of the players a break they so badly needed.

Not the victory but the scoreline and manner of Spanish collapse is the big shock.

I'm not the only one who thinks so: Below is from the BBC
Netherlands produced one of the biggest shocks in World Cup history by coming from behind to annihilate reigning champions Spain in a stunned Arena Fonte Nova.
