Apple iPad mini charging problems

When I plug my iPad mini into my laptop recently it does not charge. next to the battery symbol it just says 'not charging'? Is this normal or is there a problem?

The iPad mini needs a usb port with higher power output than the usual ones found on laptops etc. So perfectly normal, you'll need to use the dedicated charger to charge your iPad.
