True though there is an overlap between hatchet men and tough guys - if you're the former, it helps to be the latter. Thinking of the difference between Roy Keane, say, and Robbie Savage.

Dennis wise was tough as nails for Chelsea - loathe as many will be to admit it, John Terry has played through a phenomenal amount of pain and injury. Diego Someone is worthy of a mention too, France 98 antics notwithstanding. Vidic - and most of the former yugoslavia players in the mid to late 90s - were truly terrifying individuals.

Remember him at the end of his career and yes you are correct.

Nobody mentioned Kevin Morgan yet. A real tough man, hard as nails but in no way dirty.
Also, Ronnie Whelan could put his boot in when needed, but did it nice and quietly.
