take me to the shop and take me to the school in 3,5L V8? every day?

    I don't think so.

there must be like one car in this condition for every 50 classic cars that are out there. And as you can see they drive them to the show and back and that's it. Even if it's a more economical car than that Land Rover I don't think people would drive them every day/week. It's a rare occurence. No need for NCT for classics because of handful of neglected vehicles.

I'm going to go ahead and disagree with you there. You could argue this in the case of NCT on non-classics too. We all want to be safe on the road and if it means taking, frankly, **** heaps, off the road then so be it.

I am all for keeping a classic car on the road but there is only so far you can go in doing so. And a basic road worthiness test will do nobody but owners of dangerous cars no harm.

The sooner NCT is brought in for classics, the better, imo.

    Just my 2c anyway

Will you change your mind when one of those 'handful of neglected vehicles' wipes out your entire family?

I initially thought that 90 had a broken spring, but looking at it again, not so. As some one said, more than likely to retain spring under extreme articulation. Not a safety related mod. at all.

I mentioned this the other week and most people disagreed with my point

I think it is ridiculous that there is no nct for "classic cars"

I'm all for some sort of safety test but with all the taxes we have to pay now another tax which the NCT essentially is doesn't sit well with me.
Why not forgo the tax and charge the 50 odd quid to get people to go to a bi-annual simple safety test, say tyres suspension electrics and brakes. Nobody is going to get excited about giving the government more money.

Scare quotes are a nice touch.

The social benefits of testing classic cars are demonstrably minor, when weighed against the practical considerations of trying to adapt the standard test to cars which don't adhere to modern standards, even if they're operating entirely as designed. The reality is that classic cars (even the minority of "death traps" that undoubtedly turn up at shows/meets) have not proven to be any great danger to either their drivers or the broader public, primarily because they're on the roads a lot less than NCT tested cars. As mentioned before, tractors and motorbikes are far more common, on the roads much more often, and also aren't expected to be tested.

The NCT is just a stupid tax and a bit of make work for the 'motor industry'.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,042 ✭✭✭Grimreaper666

If the NCT was fair and sensible it would be a good thing but when you see some of the rubbish they come up with under the excuse for safety you have to question the whole system. If the motor tax money was put back into roads as it was originally intended instead of the banks or Irish Water, we probably wouldn't even need this test as 52% of cars are failing the test due to suspension related faults alone as a direct result of poorly maintained roads.(According to statistics from the NCT website.)

That was the stand out one for me too!! :p

They are so anti-cool. That one looks great, but a bit too much '80's black plastic on the front.

A couple of recent spots around Bray/Greystones.
    The Fiat gets regular use.
And although the other two images are not cars, it is a classic racer, and not something you see everyday :)

It's a little speck that appears in the lens now and again ba. Even my phone is an almost classic :-) it's an old Nokia with an almighty 2 megapixels. I'm not up with the kids and their new fangled gadgets.

    tc20,
What boat is that? I'm guessing that's Chris Allens yard in Bray.

Hi Donie, its in Bray alright, but about a mile from the sea. Pic was taken in the business park where I work, one of the neighbours was getting his recently refurbished classic racing yacht loaded onto the trailer. I'm guessing the boat yard you refer to is down at Bray harbour??

A couple of recent spots. The G wagen was down in Limerick, old Wicklow reg MNI.

Just sorting through a few of my shots from this year's show at Mosney. It wasn't a bad show, all told. The turn out was was quite something and as always and the content was excellent. I heard of the Mk1 Golf that was vandalised leaving the show and that was somewhat disheartening. I would think twice before bringing a car of my own next year as a result.

Anyway, I generally just point my camera at whatever interests me at these shows.
