I believe that very car (a Mk2) resided in the Swords area until very recently.

Thats mad ted. So I can apply to change my 87-D car to a zv plate next year? :) I didnt know that. I thought the zv wheeze was for people who wanted "age related" plates on their cars. So this says that it is a de-facto "Historic" plate, like we have in Spain. But if that is the case, then why id it not mandatory?

Its seems like nonsense to me.

ZV plates were lobbied for by the IVVCC, and were introduced so veteran, vintage and classic imports wouldn't have to have age-related ('87-on style) plates like 34-D-234.
You can apply to change any car over thirty years old to a ZV plate. This means that you can change your 82-D-234 or 82-D-120234 to ZV, but it also means that you can (if you are insane!) change your 234 VZU to ZV.
This situation will not change next year, so you will be able to change your 30-year-old 87-D-234 to ZV (also insane), but you will also be able to change your 87-D-120234 to ZV (probably an improvement, sad to say).
Whatever plate your car has (or got changed to, or didn't get changed from), once your car reaches 30 years from date of first registration, you can apply (it doesn't happen automatically) to change taxation class to Vin/Vet.

Are you absolutely sure about that? Having researched this lately and several dealing with that department they made it clear (whether they were right or not) that ZV was for classic imports on;ly, a classic could be changed from zv to 82 d but not 82 d to zv:confused:

ZV is for classic imports only, ie, not for imports that are not yet 30 years from first registration date. However, *any* car over 30 years can move to a ZV plate, including cars that were less than 30 years old when imported used, and cars that were registered new in Ireland (however, you'd be insane to move from an original Irish reg to a ZV, as it would devalue the car, and there is no tax/insurance advantage to a ZV plate in itself).

You can move from 82-D to ZV, but not back again, and if your imported classic was ZV from day one, it's ZV forever.
