That's one classic I wouldn't be in a hurry to get a spin in!

Having said that, although not-transferrable, its still 'cheaper' to reserve a plate here than in the UK (in most cases) and in many other European countries.

I like your spin on "cheaper". :)

UK plates start at £250 including fees and are at least transferable. Current "17" plates start at £399. NI plates from £399.

    That's a long way off €1000.

And that's in "most cases" because most of the combinations are fairly undesirable and therefore have a relatively low value.

They aren't my cup of tea, but the attraction must be very minimal for a non-transferable reservation - even if the vehicle is a keeper - if it gets trashed it's gone. I can see the point more if it's transferable as at least it can be re-used by an owner on subsequent vehicles or flogged on. So however small, there is some residual value in making the outlay.

Pretty sure that was a tall tale! Afaik it was a Ford Cortina Mk2 (saloon).
Maybe someone from Kilkenny can verify.

I remember seeing it in the Sunday World back in the 80s. It must be true.

There was a good comedy series on TG4 called "C.U. Burn" about a fella who had a turf fired crematorium in Donegal somewhere. The number of his hearse was "RIP 13"

Here's one with DIE 222 on it.

This local spot is always great for a gander. The Triumph was a few months back, Escort there today. Theres been an old Mk1 Hiace, Cortina Starcraft and others in the recent past. I bought a Mk1 Fiesta here, a few old Trafics and some other junk over the last couple of years. Always a treasure to be had...for the right price!

There used to be 6 of those H vans in the country a few years back. I had one, and oddly enough there was one about 8 miles away from me. Now there's at least 30, most of which are flogging food to hipsters. :)

Was that used in the sitcom "CU Burn" on TG4 around 20 years ago?

There are tens of thousands of UK plates which cost way way more than €1000 and which still aren't particularly 'desirable' and if you start looking at 'desirable' plates like (ex-Ireland plate) 'VIP 1' you are into a whole different league (£250,000 when last sold some years ago).

Other countries in Europe either don't have any form of cherished plates (e.g. Italy ...surprisingly?!) or getting such a plate is very restricted (e.g. Switzerland). So at least we have some (albeit limited) options in Ireland.

In an ideal world Irish 'cherished' plates would also be transferrable, but imho, 'cherished' plates do add some interest to motoring in Ireland - rather than all plates being standard monotone plates.

That Cadillac is 100 m down the road from me. It was on the road a few years ago and as far as I remember was resprayed less than 10 years ago. At a guess it hasn't moved in 3 years though

Not surprising with a 7.4 litre engine. It would probably use a gallon starting on a cold morning!

    Guessing it's a 365 GT4 2+2, because of the triple rear lights.

I just love the look of these. What a great family car!

These Ferraris always look better in anything but red.
