Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

A few of these types of threads going around at the minute and this one has a much smaller pool of players than them.

Pick the best team of players who played in the World Cup at 35 or older. Having Rafael Marquez and Pirlo at this one is what brought it to mind.

Its very tough to choose the goalkeeper. I had a hard time picking the centre backs and forward too.

    Buffon

    Cafu
    Cannavaro
    Charlton
    Van Bronckhorst

    Matthaus
    Marquez

    ---Cocu
    Pirlo
    Veron

    Sanchez

    ROGER MILLA!
Had him originally but I think Hugo Sanchez trumps him.

Pat Jennings surely in goal. Or Zoff.

In terms of performances at WC's and at International level, I'd put Miroslav Klose up front ahead of Hugo Sanchez.

Buffon hasn't played yet in the World Cup at over 35.

But Roger Milla scored four WC goals at the age of 38 and another at 42. He played a massive part in Cameroon's run in 1990.

I'd agree Sanchez is an overall better striker but Milla had much more impact at the actual WC in his autumn years than Sanchez did.

Did Giuseppe Bergomi get on the pitch in 1998? He must have been over 35 then!

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,416 ✭✭✭Zico

    Dino Zoff and Ferenc Puskas

Jay Jay Okocha and Taribo West are worth a mention.

Lamps hasn't played yet I don't think and he wouldn't get into my team anyways but I completely forgot about Drogba. Puskas was a big omission.

As mentioned Buffon didn't play either so my revised team is

    Kahn

    Cafu
    Cannavaro
    Charlton
    Van Bronckhorst

    Matthaus
    Marquez

    ---Puskas
    Pirlo
    Veron

    Drogba

Both of these were 28 last time they played a world cup game.

Lev Yashin was 36 in the 1966 World Cup whereas Zoff was 40 when he won it in '82. Either would be a great choice.

Was going to say Baresi but he was a 34 year old whipper snapper at USA 94.

Both of these were 28 last time they played a world cup game.

i'm sure the implication was they both lied about their age.

Neither comes with an asses roar of touching Buffon as a 'keeper.

Problem is Buffon hasn't actually played in the World Cup at that age. Players have to have played in a tournament at 35 or older to qualify. I think Oliver Kahn is the current best qualified keeper.

He will play tomorrow. Problem solved.

There is still a good argument to be had between him and Kahn I think.

I'd say Roger Milla would agree to play for Cameroon NOW if they picked him!And he'd probably do better than their current crop.

    At the current WC:

    Buffon

    Marquez Van Buyten Yepes

    Pirlo Karagounis Lampard

    Klose Drogba Forlan

Can't quite complete the eleven, ageist bastards.

Can't believe you are the only one to mention Puskas ...

Actually his inclusion makes me think of another interesting topic.
A list of players who played world cup and not for their native country.
Even in this world cup we have Rakitić, Costa, Eduardo, Assou-Ekotto off the top of my head.

And yes I know the Irish team would have been good example.

I am not allowed discuss …

    No there isn't.

Any age, any time, Buffon >>>>>>>>>>> Khan.

Blanco the Mexican deserves a mention , 37 at the last world cup

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 35,508 Mod ✭✭✭✭pickarooney

Klose can surely be inducted now

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,416 ✭✭✭Zico

Fritz Walter deserves a mention, Klose has a better WC record but there won't be many Stadia named after him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,012 ✭✭✭✭titan18

Think this should be how they played in the WC past 35, rather than how good they were over their whole careers.

Would have Zoff and Milla in anyway.

Others that I can find are Morten Olsen and Nilton Santos, and Swedish captain in 1958 was Nils Liedholm (never heard of him but scored in the WC final and was the captain of the side, so probably worth including)

I have to say, as good a poster as you are, your Italian bias never surprises me.

He did, but he wasn't! He was 34. Played in his 1st WC when he was 18

Oliver Kahn was phenomenal in the 2002 World Cup.
