Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

When they were drawn out, apart from going into the groups that Arsenal and Chelsea had, there was the option to go into A, B and E. Yet they were automatically put into E. Liverpool hadn't been drawn out at this stage.

It's stupid but it's also got to do with the Ukraine and Russian teams being separated for obvious reasons.

Dortmund and Schalke had to be seperated from Bayern also.

Dortmund and Arsenal are in the same group again (3 of the past 4 seasons). Man City and Bayern matchup for the 3rd time in 4 years. Barca and Ajax and Chelsea Schalke meet again.

All these rubbish restrictions and draw rules just create the same matchups over and over again.

    Football365 analysis of the article
    http://www.football365.com/mediawatch/9446023/Mediawatch
'The elite are protected so that Arsenal, who last won the title in 2004 and needed to pre-qualify this year, are shielded from the toughest opposition, while Manchester City, reigning champions with two title wins in three years, must again climb a mountain to reach the later stages.'

Firstly, Martin, we don't want to undermine your point or anything, but two of the three times that City have faced Bayern in the Champions League, they didn't enter it as champions. And Arsenal were actually in the 'Group of Death' last year with Dortmund, Napoli and Marseille, which they qualified from.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,276 ✭✭✭batistuta9

Martin must've been at the draw or else heard what was coming...

    http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/30778/9446534/domestic-winners-to-benefit-as-uefa-plans-change-to-champions-league-seeding-system
UEFA has confirmed that, under new proposals, the top eight seeds would comprise of the defending Champions League winners, along with the seven domestic league winners of the top-ranked UEFA nations.

Initial talks over the seeding system took place earlier this year, and the plans were approved by the club competitions committee in May.

    ...

The plan needs approval from the UEFA Executive Committee before it can be introduced but it is hoped it would take effect from next season.
UEFA's next Executive Committee meeting takes place on September 18 in Nyon.
it only mentions pot A though, nothing on the rest of martins' idea being implemented

The way the same teams always end up playing each other will backfire on UEFA eventually.

Fans will get tired of watching the same matchups year after year.

Anyone else think it's a little strange that RTE and ITV are showing the Liverpool match instead of the Arsenal match. I get that it's the first time Liverpool have been in the competition for 5 years but the team they are playing are obviously out matched. Liverpool should win easy and it takes the excitement out of the game for the neutral. I can't be the only one who thinks that the Dortmund/Arsenal would be a better/more competitive match.

Alas I will have to wait for the highlights after as I don't have sky (Even though sky are only showing it on Sky Sports 5, the Madrid match is on 1)

Larger fanbase in this country for Utd and Liverpool, same across the water.

If Arsenal, City, Chelsea are on the same night as Pool they'll be playing second fiddle on the TV.

    Arsenal are on Setanta.

Not strange but certainly not the best pick. I actually think RTE would have common sense prevail as they sometimes do but its actually TV3 showing the CL tonight.

Sky Sports 5 is the main channel for Champions League games so the big game will be put on that, strange I know but that is Sky.

ITV have to go for ratings to get bigger paying adverts and Liverpool along with Man Utd bring in the most viewers so those games will be chosen 1st.

Real you mean I wouldn't say very impressive Basel not the same team their best players have left an ageing Walter Samuel was their most prominent signing, maybe it was impressive; Athelti on the other hand did the opposite shock of the night the Spanish champs beaten in Greece.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,057 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

Yeah, Real. Considering how rubbish they have been in La Liga so far. I thought Basel might be a tough enough team to beat.

Found the Atletico result a bit of a shock, but Olympiakos have a good home record.

Even Berbatov's assist was so lazy for Moutinho's goal. He could easily keep it up till he's 40.

Anderlecht nearly won away from home at Galatasaray, that would've been an enormous shock.

I was wondering about that 4-0 HT. Have they sent the U19s by accident? Porto smashing BATE as well.

Two smashing free kicks within minutes of each other from Schöne nearly turned this game on its head!

    Psg have been wasteful.

    PSG 2-1 up on Barca.
Barca looking good but they've been exposed by 2 set pieces.

    Very good game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,578 ✭✭✭✭Turtwig

    Great game!

PSG deserved winners imo but wouldn't begrudge Barca the draw either. Enrique will be furious at the concessions from set pieces. Not so much the free kick, but the corner. Especially when they had momentum at that stage.

Thought PSG got a bit too cautious near the end. Cavani needs to work on his shooting. Alves his crossing. He was also lucky not to be sent off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,882 ✭✭✭✭klose

Ter stegan had a pretty poor game, missed the cross for verattis goal and could have easily cut out the cross for matuidis goals but stayed bolted to the line, bravo back in goal for the weekend you would imagine.

Bravo seems to have La Liga and Ter Stegen the UCL. Wonder if that'll change when it gets to the knock-out phase? Bravo seems the better keeper at the mo.
