Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I grew up using an Amstrad CPC so had RGB clarity from day one :)

Well ok, I only had the 'G' cus the colour monitor was too expensive....

    But what a 'G' that was! :D
Picture quality never really bothered me. I mainly got the VGA box for the time it would save me. The VGA port on my tv is never in use, and I only have one scart socket that's always in use, so it seemed like the best option.

As long as I can see what's going on, I'm pretty happy.

VGA in.. I take it you're using an LCD then yeah?

Have you ever seen this example of video quality screenshots? It's great at illustrating the differences.

    http://www.chrismcovell.com/gotRGB/rgb_compare.html

Move the mouse over the pics to see composite. Make sure you have a vomit bag on standby

Once you see the difference RGB makes to video quality you can never go back. For a 10 euro cable it just makes everything so much better.

If there's a RGB option with a console I can't play it until I have a RGB cable. I remember when the Wii came out and RGB and composite cables were delayed. It nearly killed me playing Twilight Princess when it looked so god awful.

I'm sure I've seen that before. It's pretty mental the difference a cable can make. I set up the PS2 on a 42 inch screen and it looked like crap.

I might pick one up for the SNES. Most of the games I have on the SNES look ok on the tv in my room through composite, but games like Pilotwings look pretty grainy. Probably made more obvious with all of the text in-game compared to games like Mario, donkey kong, fighting games, etc.

Most of them RGB screens aren't great. The Snes and the Playstation RGB screens are absolutely terrible imo,

    psx_rr2_rgb.jpgpsx_grad_rgb.jpg

    Wtf is going on here.
    psx_drac_rgb.jpg

I took a few pictures of a pal modded ps1 running through a retro console accessories cable into the mini and out through hdmi displayed at 720p.
Any bluriness is down to my cackhandness at taking pictures. The results are even better on the snes with RGB. I know there are cheaper RGB cables available, but it's worth it for the difference a decent cable can make.

The colleague seems pretty pleased with the SNES, hooked it up to a TV here and promptly played through without losing a life the first two world of SMB3 on Mario All stars.
He's heading into town tomorrow to pick up an extra controller and a copy of one of the SNES ports of the Mortal Kombat series.
I said he was a new retro gamer, not a retro gamer with any taste!

I remember donkey's years ago GAME had a sale on cables and accessories so I got an RGB cable for my ps1, I was never arsed about it before. When I connected it and started up the ps1 it was like that bit in the Wizard of Oz when Dorothy steps out of her black and white house into the technicolour land of Oz.

So long as he goes for MK2 or 3, it should be grand.
1 was censored to bits on the SNES.

Yeah but 2 and 3 are a bit crap as well :P

MK1 is actually a better game on the SNES. The megadrive is a poor conversion and plays very different from the arcade. The SNES plays much closer. However since the arcade game is one of the worst fighting games ever made with only the blood to save it then the megadrive version is the only one that retains that 'novelty'.

It was about then that I discovered the joys of rgb. When I look back on the years spent playing the snes on a composite cable none the wiser. Playing import games locked on a 50hz console. :o But the jump from rf to composite was amazing at the time. I was still playing N64 in composite till Retro game me an edumacation in S-Video, haven't looked back on that either. Night and day difference straight away, iirc they used to included one of these in the N64 packs, wtf would you use it:confused:

Yeah the snes one looks and sounds better but has no blood and watered down fatalities, I remember being a smug MD owner at the time :pac: MK2 is really good on the SNES too, nicer graphics and colours much closer to the arcade. MK was fun to bash around on but is as deep as a puddle combat wise, you could finish the game using the same jump kick/sweep/uppercut combo on nearly everyone and the collision detection is godawful.

It's hilarious to think back how controversial MK1 was at the time, The Sun running articles about how all kids were going to wind up ripping their friend's hearts out and having epileptic seizures at the same time.

I can't play Mortal Kombat without seeing Pit fighter and that was such a lousy game.
The non logical special move requirements were just daft, no where near as smooth as SF2.

Oh no, not pit fighter! Probably the worst fighting game ever made.

It was so..so bad. I remember CVG gave it a great review so when I spotted one in an arcade I made a beeline for it, it was bloody terrible. The characters all walked like they shat their pants and the punch sound effects were like someone being boxed in the face with a fish.

I liked Pit Fighter because it was so crap. I recall in the arcades back home Pit Fighter being very popular fir a while. It was really between that and Primal Rage. Then Killer Instinct came along and that was the next big thing and Pit Fighter was long forgotten.

I thought it was great. Always remember seeing it in Commodore Format and playing the demo on the Power Pak cover tape. Could never afford the full game though. :(

I played the crap out of primal rage. Utter crap in retrospect but a giant monkey that farted and used acid piss in a fatality was the height of comedy to my adolescent mind.

Got a load of gba games and two gba handhelds from a charity shop today, its actually scary how good the bootlegging is, i'm not sure for most of them to look at if they're legit or not, apart from the ones with nintondo printed on the back of the cart

The last thing I got might be a clue to one of them. Got it for a bargain yet still paid through the nose for it. It's also one of the rare occasions where the PAL version is significantly cheaper than the US one although who wants a smelly PAL version?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,906 ✭✭✭CosmicSmash

Everything seems to be getting more expensive, PAL stuff especially. I don't know how accurate this graph actually is but it feels about right.
I know it's probably based on U.S. releases, but the SFC titles are rising rapidly too.

Sadly, went into CEX and saw..... nothing :(

    Walked out with COD4:MW, MW2 and MW3 for €19 :(

I just want to say to everyone how sorry I am and if you think I should tender my resignation as a mod of this forum I will :(

On a brighter note, I avoided buying Knack for the PS4...... but then it's probably going to be free in this Octobers PS+, so, I'm still doomed :(

I had some fun with CoD4 and Modern Warfare 2. Even played them competitively for a while (though not thousand dollar tournament level competitively unfortunately). Got completely burned out on them about 4 months in to MW3 though.

The campaigns are a little short, but still rather enjoyable. The spec ops missions in MW2 make up for it too. I only got around to playing the MW and MW2 campaigns because UPC were taking their sweet time setting up the broadband when we moved.

Picture the scene in the gaf tonight. Alone in a dark room with just a record player, a 3DO, €19 worth of crap and a can of Lilt.

No Lilt Herr, its Lidl Diet Cola all the way!

And it was more a purchase for completists sake, I played them and finished them the first time around.
