I saw a review of McGargles on Youtube by 'The Real Ale Craft Beer', and he said it has a chemical taste to it, is this true?

Rascals Ginger porter/Red Ale is delish. But tough to get bottled I think. Had it in the blacksheep. Presume its in the usual spots by now.

I tried the McGargles IPA last night and thankfully didn't have to finish the bottle. Very bad, weird hop profile

I've found their beers range from undrinkable to unmemorable in quality.

Probably the only Irish "craft" beers I would actively avoid when trying to pick a drink.

I love the O'Haras Carlow beers such as Red Ale Stout and their IPA.
    Very nice indeed.

Is it just me or are nearly all the new Irish craft beers pale ales. I try to support Irish brewers but I just dont like pale ales so I have limited options.
Anyways my favourite is White Gypsy Blonde

    @slowharry

A quick look at the Ratebeer Top 50 Irish beers (not necessarily representative, but it gives a fair idea) would suggest there are more stouts knocking about than Pale Ales. Unless of course you're talking about IPAs.

New favorite is "The Hurler" a Copper Ale by Four Provence's brewing co.

    Foam and Fury also...

Hurler has some strong flavours alright. Wasn't 100% gone on it, but gone enough to have a few pints of it in Mulligan's last month.

I think this Corca Dhuibhne Golden Ale, which is actually quite sour, is a bit of a winner, now, I have to say.

Also try Massimo, John Keogh The Loughkeeper, Tigh Neachtain, Bunch of Grapes, Roisin Dubh, McGinns Hop House and Dock No1, all have either a couple of taps or a decent bottle selection. Stay away from the pubs around Eyre Square, O'Connells maybe have a bottle or two but the rest dont and/or are kips. An Pucan just off the Square is an exception, they have some craft. Most pubs should at least have Hooker too if youre stuck.

Actually O'Connells installed a full bar of craft stuff about 6 months ago; like 5 taps of Sierra Nevada, White Hag, 8 Degrees etc.

And its actually reasonably priced (or was about 3 months ago)

I do like the 12 acre pale ale and the Whiplash Rollover is very easy to drink on a hot day

On a side note, how do any of these piles of small brewers make a living?

By selling beer for more than it costs them to make it.
