I read this thread during Christmas but never posted :) Thought I'd just share a bit of experience I've had with the Moto 360 2nd Gen

I actually got the 42MM and I must say I'm impressed with it so far. I was going to go for the Gear S2 but as it was not compatible with Android Wear, I'm glad I went for the Moto instead. It's fairly responsive and there is no lag, some apps like Accuweather and Flightradar are a bit patchy but it's with the health and fitness stuff where it shines.

I use Sports Tracker for jogging and I can see my stats of how far I've gone and distance on the watch. I still carry my phone in my pocket but at least I can see the distance I've gone and if I should up my pace. Spotify also works well on it, so when I'm running, I can just scroll to the next song with ease.

For other stuff other than sports, it's pretty good as well, notifications come in instantaneously and are good when in a meeting, you don't have to go pulling out your phone. You can dismiss a call by swiping left. There is also wrist gestures you can make which are pretty good for scrolling through notifications.

I've looked into a few of the different watch faces you can get but have just stuck to one of the stock options.

Battery life so far is pretty good but I do charge it each night. It hasn't run out of battery before the day is out which is fine for my needs.

How is everyone else finding their smart watches? Any games/apps that people find useful they'd recommend?

Loving my Moto 360 2nd Gen too.

Haven't spotted any "killer apps" yet, still playing around with it.

Any idea how to increase the vibration? I find it too brief, so I a missing stuff.

    Hey Tom,

I came across this link this evening which might be of interest. http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-360/general/light-flow-supports-android-wear-t3022377

I've found the vibrations fine on mine but maybe I have the strap tighter on my wrist.

    Completely OT:

back to work after the Christmas break, three of us sitting around lunch when we notice each has a smartwatch - one Apple, one Samsung S2 and me with my Motorola.

Cue nerdfest comparison and masses of "Ooohs" and "Aaaahs". :D

A few of the guys in here received Fitbits but I think I'm the only one who got a smart watch. My first attempt at demonstrating 'Ok Google' was a complete fail as I had to scream at it 5 times before it decided to work. Normally it works fine - Typical! I found it very handy last night when I was cooking, I was able to use Ok Google to set a timer which came in really handy. More of a gimmick I think but maybe I'll use it more. One voice command I find very useful is for setting reminders and the likes, I did this on the phone using the voice commands before the watch anyway but on the watch it's just as handy.

How are you finding the battery life? I'm easily getting a day out of mine with at least 50 - 60% battery to spare. I do leave the screen off though.

Also, what fitness app is everyone using with the 360? I've got Moto Body and Google Fit installed but find it annoying as I've got three different readings for steps depending on which app I use (I've a Note 4 so S Health is installed on the phone) Am I not pairing up Moto Body with Google Fit correctly?

So for the last while my Pebble has been on its last legs, the screen is getting scrambled at random times and it is constantly disconnecting from my phone. But today the strap snapped 🙠so now I am watch less. My wrist feels naked.

On the look out for a Moto 360 now.

I'm still waiting on Amazon to ship my Moto 360 Sport. The planned ship day of 1 Jan came and went. Currently it's just stating out of stock and they're saying that they're waiting on the watches from their supplier.:(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,284 ✭✭✭ongarite

Got my Moto 360 from Amazon Spain yesterday.
Very nice bit of kit, lots of comments from work colleagues on its looks and watch-like appearance.

One pain in the hoop for me though, which I should have researched up on first.
You can't pair an Android Wear watch to 2 phones (for me my Nexus 6 and iPhone 6).
If you want to switch between both as was my plan with Nexus 6 for personal use and iPhone for work use, you have to factory reset the watch and pair it again each time.

So Following on my earlier query I am still looking for a new wearable.
The Sony SW3 has caught my eye for value but the LG Urbane is striking!
I much prefer the look of the Urbane but it is a €100 quid more.
I am wondering if there is any point waiting for the Sony SW4?

Having a PITA trying to find any concrete details on its release though.
I would prefer the HRM to GPS to be honest, but the holy grail would be to have both.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,078 ✭✭✭fenris

Double check reviews of how effective the HRM actually is, you mass find that you need a separate device for it to be actually useful, most smartwatch hrm are optical rather than electrical so the results can be very variable.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,212 ✭✭✭✭Tom Dunne

Even in use, the two devices I have used (Samsung Gear and Moto 360 2nd Gen), the HRM is quite, shall we say, temperamental. I honestly think the HRM is a gimmick on all these devices.

And in terms of waiting for the Sony - you know how it is, no matter what device you buy, there is always something better around the corner. You could be waiting forever for the "perfect" device (if such a thing even exists).

Can anyone who has a Gen 2 Moto 260 confirm the following for me?

Does it have standalone GPS - ie. an I use it to track a run without having to bring a phone with me?
Whats the internal memory on it and can it connect to bluetooth headphones - again, so I don't need to bring a phone in order to listen to music?

Anyone know if the Sports version is just the Gen 2 watch with a sports strap?

Gen 2 does not have standalone GPS, so if you're going for a run, you'll need to bring your phone to track it. I use sports tracker and spotify when running and carry a note 4 in my pocket, I guess I'm just used to it at this point. Sports tracker is really good as it sends a notification to your watch every kilometre, letting you know your average speed and time for the last km. Spotify app lets you change song on your watch so you don't need to route out your phone from your pocket.

The Sports version does have GPS so it's not really the same as the Gen 2.

Internal memory in the Gen 2 is 4GB and it can connect to bluetooth although I haven't tried this myself.

    Good Question,

My ideal is to be able to just carry the watch and my bluetooth headset and thats it nothing else.

    run light.

I would hope to run Spotify (offline) and Map my Run.

Would the new Moto 360 Sport do this and do it well ?

I don't think Spotify music is stored on the watch, the watch app only allows you to control previous/next/volume up/volume down. If you think of your collection of songs stored on Spotify, you could have well more than 4GB worth of data which wouldn't all fit onto the device anyway.

You could just stick the MP3's on the device and use that along with MMR but I don't think Spotify will work without the phone, at least not yet

Just poking around here with Spotify Premium and I can't see any way to transfer songs to the watch.

I'm pretty sure you can pair the watch with a headset and play music from the watch. I'll have a poke around! (any excuse :pac:)

I'm quite happy with mine, in terms of design its a lot better in person.

I can get a day and half out of mine in ambient mode.

Performance can be choppy at times but I don't have any other AW device to compare it to.

At €240 its good value compared to the Huewai Watch and arguably better than the Moto 360 Gen 2.

Right, got the watch to pair with the Bluetooth headphones, but can't seem to get the songs to transfer over though.

Google Play on the phone is letting me choose which songs to sync, but they don't, for reasons that are not clear to me.

I'll play with it over the weekend and see.

Did the sport arrive after ? Thinking of picking up a android wear at the minute and really like the sporty loom of this.

    This upsets me,

It would be my primary reason to move to 'phone free' for running.
The bliss of just a watch and just bluetooth headphones would be top of my list.

The heartrate and activity are quite annoying as notifications, and quite useless too I find. It congratulated me on my day's HR activity the other day when I just woke up, took a bus to work, sat at a desk for 9 hours, took a bus to a pub, walked home 100m. It also seems to sometimes increase my steps when I'm on a bus or tram.

Is there any way of disabling these entirely, and a good watchface which just shows calendar and weather with no blank where steps or HR should be?

So, I finally got my Moto 360 Sport! It arrived on Friday via Parcel Motel. Lots of fun playing with it so far. The rubber strap is a little bit of a lint magnet at times. The trade off is that it's very comfy to wear. I haven't worn a watch in about 20 years as they usually annoy me.

I'm still using the sport watch face but looking around at alternatives. I tested out the gps briefly last night and it works alright. Quite impressed by the battery life so far. Managed about 32 hrs on the first charge which included messing around with it a LOT.

EDIT: fixed the battery life. maybe i need a calculator on the watch...

Thanks for that. I'm on the hunt at the minute and I'm torn between the Moto 360 sport (£180 on Amazon) and the Urbane (£160 on Amazon).

I work in an office so the Urbane would obviously look better in that environment but I think the sport would look better outside of work, just more casual.

    I'm so confused :(

Have a Pebble for a long time but I finally pulled the trigger on the LG Urbane (Silver) and should be delivered on Monday. No GPS but that wasn't a deal breaker for me as I always have the phone with me and I think its a nice looking watch. The Huawei is also great looking but was a bit too dear for my liking.

Anyone using Tasker or IFTTT with Andorid Wear and if so what do you use it for?

The sport doesn't look super sporty. The case & strap is smooth black matte finished rubber with a nice gunmetal grey bezel. You can dress it up a bit in work with a nicer watch face. I work in an office, but it is quite a casual place.

If you need the gps, go for the sport otherwise I'd say urbane or 42mm Moto 360 v2 with a leather strap.

Yes doesn't really help - it hasn't always been a problem, only in recent weeks (perhaps since an update). Looking online it seems that I'm not the only one, but there is no clear fix. I will maybe try unpairing or a factory reset.

Kind of embarrassing that my 1st gen moto 360 gets it before my S6 edge plus.

Android Wear is not open like Android itself is, so it cannot be modified by manufacturers, so there is one pure version of it making it easy to update, whereas with the phone Samsung will have to get vanilla Android, add their bits and test before pushing the mutated version of Android.
