Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Such a pity Argentina didn't score earlier to wake the Swiss up

Poor free kick. Hard luck Swiss. Definately had the better chances. I dont blame them for giving Messi the extra bit of attention. The guy is fúcking one hell of a genius.

Was thinking he should've been sly and tried to go under the wall. Insane finish to the game, but Christ I really wanted some more penalty tension!

The last 5 minutes have been ten times more exciting than the previous 115.

Because the Swiss decided to try and score.

    Was that wall 10 yards?

And then we have the French, who don't need luck since they own the Refs.

Happy that Arg are going through, Swiss wanted pens since HT.
Brilliant run by Messi, doing his stuff as usual, and setting it up.
    Nice finish from Di Maria.
If Di Maria keeps playing like that, Arg will suffer for it against the better teams. But it's hard not to like the guy as he just keeps going.

Goals have dried up in the second round but so much drama and excitement.

    A dive is a dive.

People wanted Switzerland to win and the Netherlands to lose.

    Alpine Messi

Why didn't the Swiss play like that before they went behind?

What a **** effort, just pass it sideways and blast it.

Argentina saved by a inanimate wooden object rooted to the pitch.

The post helped a bit too.

    Was that wall 10 yards?

No, but then it was almost certainly a dive.

    Shocker of a FK.

Well, with the Argentinian players ignoring the spray-line with impunity what could he do?

The way things are going, everyone will be saying the same when both teams meet in the final. :pac:

Can't compare the two, imo. Brazil getting a helping hand from the refs, Argentina from poor finishing by their opponents.

    Why?
Cause the swiss were underdogs? And The dutch weren't in their game???

Di Maria needs to be careful, if he keeps up that heart celebration he'll be getting a letter from Bale's solicitor.

Certainly a dramatic conclusion to the penultimate game of this stage.

Did the Swiss keeper actually attempt a bicycle kick in Argentina's box?

This WC has officially had everything now :pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,370 ✭✭✭✭Son Of A Vidic

Unprecedented that none of the traditionally big teams have really impressed at this WC.

Not at all. This ref helping nonsense has stuck to Brazil since the first game without it being warranted since.

How the Argentinian manager can't get more of a tune out of those attacking players is incredible. It's not like they've been starved of possession or always on the back foot either. The front four players just look like a bunch of strangers with no direction or ideas. Terrible stuff.

Presumably, yes. I'm with you here. A majority of neutrals probably favoured Mexico and Switzerland which is why the dives were received so differently. The fact Robben's won a penalty which decided the game brought a lot more attention to that too.

Couldn't agree more it's nonsense. ON The luck thing I don't get it Brazil and argentina both deserved to go through .

A pity it never went to penalties. While it is a cruel way to lose, I've really enjoyed them at this WC.

Not disagreeing on the refs helping Brazil at one time or another, but Argentina were quite fortunate in beating Bosnia, Iran, Nigeria and now, Switzerland.

If you watched any sort of football other than the World Cup you'd know that you're talking right out your arse.... Fred was never a quality player, Higuain is a world class striker and has been for a good few years. Higuain had a fine first season at Napoli, arguably better than Benzema's season at Madrid given the quality Benzema has around him....I'm sure if Madrid had kept him and sold Benzema he would have had an incredible goal tally for the season.

Higuain is a quality player but he's not world class. World class means you'd walk on to any team. I can think of a lot of strikers I'd have ahead of him, Zlatan, Falcao, Suarez, Costa(pre world cup) etc.

Higuain has been linked with very high profile teams, the latest Barcelona...one of the finest teams on the planet...so I'm pretty sure he could walk onto most teams and do a decent job...Of course he's not the best striker in the world but to compare him to Fred, who's best days were as an impact sub at Lyon is disgracefully ignorant.

Higuain had a better year than Falcao and has been very consistent over the years as well... Costa is incredibly overhyped due to one great season... If I was to buy either him or Higuain, it'd be the latter for sheer reliability and consistency. Like it or not, Higuain is definitely up there with the best out and out strikers in the world, making him world class for sure. Sure I can name strikers I'd pick before him, but not that many.
