It is not done in Ireland as only vets are allowed to put down animals for the dog warden/council pounds.
In our practice dogs are given iv injections are given in 99 percent of cases.

if the animal cannot be handled to do this a sedative is given into the muscle and then an iv injection. If this isnt working due to issues with blood pressure/veins then an anaesthetic given before we would even consider using a heart stick. An animal under anaesthetic cannot feel the pain.Without an anaesthetic on board it is inhumane.

Cats are often put down with a abdominal injection if they are feral but it is an overdose of an anaesthetic given and they slowly drift off into sleep. It is not painful and is less stressful on the cat then being handled for an iv injection

How can one say it's not done in Ireland though unless someone is privy to the practice in all of the pounds. I wonder is it a discretionary choice of the vet? You describe what I'd see as best practice but if a vets discretion is involved it wouldn't be mandatory. What do you think?

That's not true. Euthanasia is essentially an overdose of anesthetic. When injected into the vein, even without sedatives it is quick and painless.

Sedatives are mainly used if an animal is difficult to handle or if it is too hard to find a vein. As someone said sometimes cats will be sedated and then injected directly into the liver/kidneys/heart. Death is almost instantaneous but this would cause pain in the moments before death if the animal wasn't sedated.

It's on the daily mail? And you find it a credible story?

Aru said using a heart stick without anesthetic was inhumane - he wasn't referring to normal euthanasia without sedation so you've misunderstood his/her post.

It either does or doesn't take place regardless of who reports it. The Daily Mail can print what it wants but either it's a cruel method or it is not and the frequency of its application can be substantiated somewhat through boardsies if they share their knowledge. In my opinion if you try to suggest the link is from an unreliable source let us all prove that but it's easy to verify if an injection for a p.t.s. (Put to sleep) application is humane, cruel, standard, commonplace or obhorrant. Posters replys are valuable in this instance more so than an individual's opinion on a source. But that's
just my thoughts on the daily mail knocking.
