What's your favorite Shooting Brake conversion?

Be it a concept or an actual car.

I've always loved estates. I think most cars look better in estate form (with a few exceptions, the Corolla estate of all generations being a main example)
I've only ever had 3 estates myself, a Mondeo MK3, Rover 75 and A6 C5 and I think they all looked nicer than their saloon/hatch cousins.

Anyway, there are a few SB conversions that I like. But my all time favorite, theres a toss up between these two:

Aston Martin Lagonda, boxy beauty this, my only criticism being why couldn't they have some glass made up to suit the side profile.

Maserati Quattroporte, its just gorgeous really.

Shooting brake me hole. They all look crap!

I put it in the 'odd special editions' thread but it applies here too!
It's not particularly beautiful but its very nicely proportioned.
*dunno if it counts as a proper 'conversion' though, as it was in production.

I like the Ferrari 456 too

The only one of these I'd consider remotely near a shooting brake is the BMW Z3M, and even that is a little short. The rest are just estates. Some nice ones to be fair... but just estates.

Yeah, shooting brake is basically a conversion from a regular saloon/hatch for cars that aren't actually available in estate form.

    So?

They look like something from the Thunderbirds, although thats not a bad thing, I like the latter, very nice, the first one looks like a hearse though :) and I like estates.
Having said that I like the Toyota Fielder (last corolla version in estate with spec).
Its the previous goggle eyed version I didnt like in estate, although even the goggle eyed corolla in hatch has grown on me.

Whats this shooting brake stuff, has this car actually been made?
    looking it up

It seems they are 2 doors though?

Interesting curves on that Quattroporte, bit jaguar looking at the back end?

    Around 1910.

Theres a difference between an estate car and a shooting brake conversion car. I don't think people on here quite understand.

Same here bu apparently a shooting break is a 2 door coupe estate essentially according to my vast Wikipedia skills. Still a weird name that I don't like. sports wagon sounds a little better to me. I thought it was some fancy new break to replace disk breaks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,206 ✭✭✭Zcott

I was familiar with the term meaning a car with an extra bit on the back for all the shooting gear you'd need to go away on a shooting break. I didn't know it referred to two door coupes which is why I posted a load of regular estates. But any excuse to post the 159 estate...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,381 ✭✭✭mb1725

Mercedes are using the term for the new CLS : http://www2.mercedes-benz.co.uk/content/unitedkingdom/mpc/mpc_unitedkingdom_website/en/home_mpc/passengercars/home/new_cars/models/cls-class/_x218.flash.html?csref=mbuk_shootingbreak_url_280812

"Originally, a ‘shooting brake’ was a vehicle used for
hunting by the English gentry. The term brake or break
initially referred to a chassis designed to ‘break in’ horses.
Eventually a range of robust customised coaches was
created to transport shooting parties and their equipment.
Hence the name ‘shooting brake’. In the 1960s, motorised
shooting brakes became very popular in the UK. These
were grand sports cars, which offered their well-to-do
    owners ample space and luxury."

They also have a 4 door "coupe" though. I assume it's intentional stupidity for marketing.

Volvo C30 is supposed to be a shooting brake.

I cant tell the difference between it and any other 3 door hatch though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,075 ✭✭✭tom_k

I believe a shooting-brake was originally a robust horse drawn vehicle designed to carry hunting parties with a covered compartment for guns, ammunition and game.

I think the early nineties Aston Martin Virage shooting brake was a good looking example of the motorised incarnation of this type of vehicle. The lines are more pleasing (to me anyway) than the Lagonda.

Pack a couple of Holland & Hollands, your deer rifle of choice and head to the Scottish highlands for a weekend of hunting. With many refuelling stops along the way :D

    virage_400.jpg

Sorry, didn't spot some earlier shooting-brake definitions...

    That's a one-off unofficial Corvette shooting brake, I think.

Callaway have a few renderings in existence of a current/future generation Corvette shooting-brake but I don't think anything's been produced yet in the metal.

Not happy with any of the definitions of what a shooting break actually is I decided to do some googleling and found

What Makes A Car A Shooting Brake?

As best as I can tell it really comes down to the fenders. If the space between the front edge of the front door and the back edge of the front wheel arch is greater than the distance between the rear edge of the front door and the front of the rear wheel arch then it it a shooting brake. Otherwise it is a wagon or hatchback.

I must say I quite like shooting breaks!
