Advice on buying a camera in the U.S.

Hi folks,

Hoping I could get a bit of advice. My wife is going to New York in November. We were thinking about picking up a few electrical items including a camera. Our camera at the minute is a 6.1 megapixel Sony that I got back around 2004 so its about time we upgraded. Our thinking is we'd like to spend around €200 to €250 which would be about $350.

We'd like something fairly decent if possible as we've young kids and want to get the best pictures we can. That said, we'd like something that is easy to use as well.

Any advice and recommendations are greatly appreciated.

That is our plan thanks but as I know absolutely nothing about cameras I was hoping to get some advice re what one to pick.

All great cameras...Really depends on your Budget and if you want a more compact camera or not.

Camera doesn't need to be compact. Thanks for the recommendations but all of those are above my budget of $350 to $400.

I'm just looking for the best bang for my buck that I can get to be honest.

If I have totally misread, then I appologise,

but I think there was some cofusion - I think muppetkiller was posting some examples of compact cameras - anothother name for Point and Shoot camera, which is different to the many types if interchangeable lens cameras.

These are likely to be around your budget, as when lenses become changeable the cameras become expensive!

Types of interchangeable lens cameras are:
micro 4/3rs (named after the camera sensor size), mirrorless (a term which can be applied to m4/3rds) and DSLRS.

I only say this because I read "camera doesnt need to be compact" - if I have misread, again I apologise (and retreat with read face..!)

Seems to be on budget at $350. Great camera with manual controls if you want to expand your knowledge, otherwise set it to Auto and point and shoot. Also shoots video in HD. Slightly larger than most point and shoot but if you have an interest in photography or think that you might like to broaden your knowledge then for me this would be the one.

Good luck with your purchase regardless of what model you go for...

I saw that it is on sale due to being discontinued though. Will it still be available in the US in November?

Would you also like Tonights lotto numbers ? lol
I've no idea but I'd imagine so.

I'd hold off on deciding on what camera to get until October.
Photokina is in September so all the new cameras will be out then. On the plus side most of the cameras I listed above should be much cheaper too.

Thanks for the info. It's November she'll be going so will knock back here around then.
