In five penalties, Krul has saved as many penalties as in his whole career... 2/32.

    Specialist.

I knew it had happened before but i couldn't remember when or where Martin O'Neill did it once back in the 90s apparently (http://www.theguardian.com/football/2005/apr/27/theknowledge.sport)

Good idea when there's a sizeable difference in quality between the keepers at penalty saving. Requires you to not use all your subs though and not get the fresh legs for extra time.

Leaving van Persie on was genius as only Van Persie could of lost that coin toss and thus starting the chain of events that led to The Netherlands winning that penalty shoutout.

    Genius by van Gaal tbh.

I'm glad to see the Netherlands progress. The semi-final with Argentina is a mouthwatering prospect whereas, in all honesty, a Costa Rica v Argentina semi-final is over before it starts.

Hats off to Costa Rica though. A superb showing from them throughout the tournament. Winning a group containing England, Italy and Uruguay is an immense achievement in itself but to get to a quarter-final and only lose on a penalty shootout - fantastic from them. Hopefully they can keep their progression going over the coming years.

Netherlands deserved to go through, but Costa Rica's players will go home as National heroes for sure.

    Costa Rica 3 Uruguay 1
    Costa Rica 2 Italy 1
    Costa Rica 0 England 0
Costa Rica 1 Greece 1 (won 5-3 on pens)
Costa Rica 0 Netherlands 0 (lost on pens 4-3)

Heads up High and Proud Costa Rica.

I think the psychological impact of Krul coming on was more important than his actual skill set

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 35,514 ✭✭✭✭efb

Even if he did, so what? His job is to put off the taker and save penalties.

    Its unsporting behaviour.

Might want the Argentinis to win the next game , will decided on the night as it effects nothing for me. :D

His and Kuyt's are perfect examples to kids of where to put the perfect penalty. Had an old video of Pele explaining how if you hit the inside side netting like that with power it's nearly impossible to save. That's what he used to practice over and over and over. Always stuck with me.

RVP and Kuyt hit unstoppable penos today. In fairness to CR theirs were really good too, Krul just make good saves. None of the penos from either side were soft

Very much this. It would have put doubt into the CR penalty takers minds.

If he wins it only the final will be remembered. Trust me. The man is a legend for the invincible season he had at club level. Will probably never be equalled.

Holland deserved it in the end. Costa Rica were gallant but just did not have enough up front. Hopefully, Argentina will give them a game. Robben diving is about the most frustrating cheating thing that puts me off football.

That is actually a good point, Louis van Gaal does seem to lack the balls to sub out Van Persie when... OH NO WAIT HE HAS DONE IT IN EVERY OTHER GAME THIS WORLD CUP!!

I'd absolutely love to see Argentina smash Netherlands, their behavior throughout that penalty shootout was disgraceful.
    will you stop
... goalkeeper tried to psych out a few players  put the ball in the net to answer him .. lot worse going on in the game diving / players time wasting / players staying down faking injury ... better team on the night won , costa rica 1 shot on target in the 118 min and 1 corner sums it all up.

There were plenty of people writing costa rica off before the games against uruguay and italy too so theres no guarantee whatsoever that argentina wouldve had an easy night against them had they gone through.

Fair play to the costa ricans they made a right go of it.

Hope argentina beat the dutch now - mostly because I want to see messi lifting the trophy

daraobriain: Ah, that's sad. Not just for the fairy tale ended, but with Krul being such a dick throughout the penalties.
