Does upc dvr boxes record programs on time or is there something in the signal feed that tell its over. Another words if a program over runs does the upc box keep recording.

No, the recording stops at the scheduled time so if a match goes to extra time you'll miss out.

But you can always remote record

There is a setting that allows you to add extra time e.g. 10min to every recording by default.

What is annoying is that the Horizon EPG often doesn't update correctly and I have missed entire shows out of a series.

Using sky + in one of the rooms and nearly sure it wil record until the program finishes, F1 yesterday went on for an hour or so more but still seem to record.
What do sky put in their signal feed that UPC don't, any chance this feature will be added to the UPC box or is this a hardware upgrade.

Sky can do updates to their schedules on the fly for Sky broadcasted shows as they are both a content provider and a broadcaster. So since they are doing the actual scheduling, updating the schedule has a very quick turnaround. For non sky channels its just a matter of how quickly the broadcaster lets sky know of the changes and they can play those out to the Sky boxes

UPC use a 3rd party to update their schedule data so if a change in the schedule is happening on a sky channel, sky have to tell the 3rd party who have to update the schedule and pass that to UPC. Since the box would need to get this info before the scheduled program is finished, this will most likely not be updated in time. This is completely beyond UPC, or most other broadcasters control. SKY being a content provider and broadcaster is pretty much the exception to this.

Shame, in the world of tech we live in I would have thought each feed being broadcast would have some form of code ingrained into it unique to that program (like a barcode) and this would trigger the start and stop of a recording

Yea, no, it really doesn't work that way, at all, even a little bit.

Freeview+ has a feature called Accurate Recording

PDC (back in analogue VCR days) could so that. It used Teletext packet 8/30.
I guess this is not available anymore, though (as donspeekinglesh mentioned) it has sort of evolved into Freeview+ accurate recording.

Too bad UPC can't use something like this, the current system can't handle overruns.

the freeview box can only do it if the broadcaster sends those flags and the vast majority of them don't. So its a good option in theory but in practice it falls flat.
