May need POM to cover 7 if TOD is out until after Christmas. Can use DOC2.0 or Copeland at 6 with Stander at 8.

We could but I think out strongest backrow would be POM, TOD and CJ.

Now we're moving Peter and bringing in Dave or Robbie.

    Or JOD

I would imagine JOD is the most likely to slot into that 7 shirt.

Could be a great opportunity for Jordan Coghlan to prove his worth.

    I forgot we signed Coghlan.

Are either JOD or JC a 7, I think Jack slotted in their as a sub last season but doubt he's ready to start a cup game there for us.

I seem to remember hearing that the reason JC came to Munster was to play 7.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,257 ✭✭✭Hagz

I don't think it particularly matters much if they've played a lot of rugby at 7. It won't be a sharp learning curve for them if they have to slot in at openside and they're both very athletic players as it stands.

Actually, you know what, I don't think Jack O'Donoghue is 6'2. I think it's a mistake on the Munster site. He looks more like he's 6'4 to me.

He's pretty tall alright, maybe not quite 6'4.

Yeah, after some research I happened upon an old image probably from his Academy profile and it has him listed at 6'3. That makes more sense.

Did Chamberlain play a lot of his rugby last season at openside?

Maybe Munster could sign an NIQ injury cover after the RWC with the permission of the IRFU. What's McCaw doing?

Jack has played 7 on one or two occasions at 20s interpro level, the first year he played 20s, and slotted in there once or twice but isn't going to play 7 in big games.
Coghlan its rumoured is to be looked at as an openside but has rarely played there

    Ouch!!

That's such a terrible blow for him....Seemed to be going really well on Saturday too...

6wks off his feet, then I'd assume probably the same again in recovery/rehab time at least...So back for end of October early November sometime at the earliest...

  • Registered Users Posts: 24,258 ✭✭✭✭Buer

Him being back by late October or early November would be hugely optimistic, I reckon.

If someone told me he'll play again in 2015, I'd take it in a heartbeat.

Probably fair , I guess a lot depends on the nature of the "collateral damage" to muscles, ligaments etc.

Either way , hugely unfortunate for the guy....

Looks like Bill Johnston might be a late addition to the Academy, or else just involved in training.

Part of sub academy and just training with the squad I would assume. May be added after under 20s interpros if he goes well in them

Curse of the 7 jersey in World Cup warm ups. Gutted for the guy. And in everything he tweeted today to thank all the medics and hospital. What a gent!

    From the IT

Tyler Bleyendaal due to make his first start for use on Friday night.

Copeland, Sherry and Dave Foley are back in camp fully fit.

Denis Hurley has picked up a foot injury and left training wearing a moon boot.

GvdH could also start on Friday night but Sherry is getting a few more weeks of preseason before getting a game.

Getting sherry back on the pitch is great. I genuinely feared we wouldn't see him again. Great to see Foley back is brilliant as well. Can't wait for the season now.

Former Gloucester winger Shane Monahan is currently training with Munster: http://www.munsterrugby.ie/news/20950.php#.Vcojsct0yHs

He barely played for Gloucester last season and suffered an injury in January.

He had been talking about being RWC cover for Leinster but obviously that didn't happen.

He'd be decent squad cover if that's what was needed, wouldn't see him starting much if GVDH, Conway and one or both of Zebo and Jones are available. Might be useful cover at centre though.

Is he better than our current crop of wingers? I can't see the need for him, we've Greg O'Shea in the academy who could surely be tried in a few Pro12 games this season.

He's played 13 a fair bit and also covers 15 if I'm not mistaken, so he's a good experienced bench option for the international periods.

IIRC he was a regular at Gloucester before Humphreys took over.

I saw basically none of Glaws last season but I can certainly recall him playing a bit the season before. He's not a bad player.

Andrew Smith is starting for Montpellier tomorrow. I'm not sure if he has signed permanently or if he's there as RWC cover.

Confirmed: Shane Monahan 3 month deal.

    http://www.munsterrugby.ie/news/20956.php#.Vcx0r8t0yHs

Given that Munster could be missing Earls, Zebo, Jones and now with Hurley possibly missing through injury it's probably a necessary signing. Hopefully he can put himself in the shop window.

    Munster XV:
    David Johnston; Darren Sweetnam, Cian Bohane, Matt D'Arcy, Gerhard van den Heever; Tyler Bleyendaal, Cathal Sheridan;
John Ryan, Niall Scannell, BJ Botha; John Madigan, Dave Foley; Shane Buckley, Jordan Coghlan, Robin Copeland

Replacements: Kevin O'Byrne, Peter McCabe, Rory Burke, Donncha O'Callaghan, Sean McCarthy, Ryan Foley, Bill Johnston, Diarmuid McCarthy, Conor Oliver, Ned Hodson, Steve McMahon.

John Madigan, Foley, Copeland, Bohane and VDH all return from injury. Bleyendaal in for his first senior start. Jordan Coghlan starting at 7.

Bill Johnston on the bench, must be very highly rated.

On the injury front, Denis Hurley, who picked up an ankle injury at Tuesday's training session will undergo further review after the weekend once the swelling subsides.

    That doesn't sound good.

So we've Darcy and Monahan on three month deals.

Was Diarmuid McCarthy given a contract ?

Delighted to see Bohane, Madigan, Copeland and Bleyendaal start, hope they have a bit more luck on the injury front this season.

D'Arcy is six months. Monahan gone in November I imagine.

Looking at that backline shows how much we needed Monahan. Keatley will come back in but even then a few injuries could leave us with a very young 11-15.

It probably means nothing but I'd be delighted if Madigan's selection over DOC is a sign of things to come this season.

Not sure who will be scrummaging behind Botha between the two locks, if Madigan is there its even more interesting.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,177 ✭✭✭letowski

Great to see Bohane back too. He had a bad injury last year when he was destined to see a good bit of first team action. Would like to see him do well this year, we need depth at center.

Madigan needs an injury free year, unfortunately for him he's been picking up injuries at the worst time.

Hard to say, he's not shy of the skillset. He's a bit of a Reid 2.0, as in he's a very intelligent centre, knows what lines to pick, has a wicked turn of pace and great hands, but is a bit of a light frame. He's not small, but he isn't your typical brute 12, he'll needle his way through the gain line rather then burst over it, so it'll be interesting to see if he can step up to senior rugby.

    Champions Cup 2015/16 - Pool 4 - Rounds 1 to 4:

R1 Sat Nov 14th Munster v Benetton Treviso 17:15 Thomond Park Sky Sports
R2 Sun Nov 22nd Stade Francais v Munster 16:15 Stade Jean Bouin Sky Sports
R3 Sat Dec 12th Munster v Leicester Tigers 19:45 Thomond Park BT Sport
R4 Sun Dec 20th Leicester Tigers v Munster 17:15 Welford Road BT Sport

Details of the Round 5 and 6 fixtures will be confirmed by EPCR after Round 4 in December:

R5 Jan 15/16/17 Munster v Stade Francais TBC Thomond Park
R6 Jan 22/23/24 Benetton Treviso v Munster TBC Stadio Comunale di Monigo

Two Saturday home kickoffs and two Sunday away kickoffs for Rounds 1-4.

It's a great order of fixtures IMO. I like Treviso at home first up, five points in the bag before a trip to Stade Francais who can be flaky at home. We start the double header with Leicester at home and finish with Treviso away.

Negatives - the away games are Sunday evening games, not great for those hoping to travel.

The Leicester game is so close to Christmas I think that's a write-off for a lot of supporters anyway. Sunday is a big TV day in France so no surprise SF/Munster is Sunday (Toulon/Leinster is also Sunday).
