I recall laughing reading an article of Anderson's ( Man U) desire to get into the Brazilian WC squad after his loan move to Fiorentina in January. Its not actually that laughable given that some of the players Scolari elected to include in the squad are absolute s***e.

Just not in the football :D

    Ozil is crap

What a silly comment. To be fair to him, off the top of my head, he has had a better World Cup than:

Liverpool: Sterling, Sturridge, Gerrard, Suarez, Toure, Reina, Mignolet, Lambert and Henderson

Man Utd: Jones, Rooney, Smalling, Welbeck, Januzaj, Kagawa, Valencia and Evra

Chelsea: Oscar, Willian, Hazard, Ramires, Lampard, Torres and Cahill

Spurs: Paulinho, Chadli, did they have anyone else at the World Cup?

City: Kompany, Fernandinho, Toure and Silva.

I would say Ozil hasn't had too bad a time.

Liam Brady hit the nail on the head earlier about Irish football, it's all about physicality, looking for the big physical lads, no one holding on to the ball and passing it. Totally agree, encountered the same growing up, 11 6ft+ lads on a pitch hoofing it up, and it's still happening in leagues in Ireland today. German football tonight was unreal, 1 touch 2 touch pass and move, totally blew Brazil away... that's what we should be teaching our kids who play the game now

Have you not watched Dundalk this season?

The Brazilian team have been swaggering around as if they own the world cup and are ENTITLED by nature of being born in Brazil, and have been carried along, scraping past each game on a wave of support, from their fans and excessive respect by their opponents.

Tonight we saw players with average talent, no character and no sense of pride. They shamed their country and they shamed football by a performance that was worse than teams I have seen on Sunday mornings in my local park.

    This is crazily hypeebolic

exception to the rule and a great coach who wants the game played correctly, I'm talking about grass roots stuff and weekend managers tbh, "eh, I'll throw the big lads on", rubbish...

Is it? What station are you watching? If it's RTE then I'm not surprised. Only German player besides Mertesacker who plays in the EPL. Didn't set the league on fire in his debut season but hardly a flop. Ozil is an easy target.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,546 ✭✭✭✭murpho999

Why are people going on about Ozil when he's just reached the World Cup final with a record breaking victory.

Do you think he gives a sh1t what internet warriors think?

Not watching anything, just reading over this thread and that article posted above. There's a sh*tload of players that had a far worse time in the competition.

Brasil got found out for the flops they are. Scolari...that's the problem. Picks his pet players, and only a few with real talent. Well done Germany.

    Ah right.

Don't understand it myself. Ozil has been competent, done right. Didn't set the tournament on fire but Thought Gotze's form dipped a bit and Ozil should definitely start the final.

Ozil has been poor. You'd expect him to be leading the way in this Germany side - he's the most talented player in the squad.

    Instead he's been a passenger.

He's crap! Let me down by not scoring along with Lavezzi tomorrow night. Honestly, I think the 42.5 million man should be punished by being made to move to Liverpool, and play at Anfield.
    That should show him!

It really isn't weird why he's being made into a footballing pariah. People love to see high profile failures and his high fee has the press brandishing knives and fans are swallowing this and regurgitating it.
I think he will have a great season next year and pie will be doing rounds.

  • Registered Users Posts: 429 ✭✭BarcodeMuncher

Bar Lucas Moura, Miranda and Filipe Luis there wasn't much else out there for him, personally I would have brought any brazillian striker in their league, perhaps Pato. The home World Cup came at the wrong time for Brazil in terms of the talent necessary to win it and the finances to fund it properly.

Whats the largest defeat a team has had in the World Cup Finals?

Congo ( then called Zaire) circa 1974, lost about 9 - 0, to Yugoslavia, I think. Dont know if that's a record for finals or not. Tubilando was the goalkeeper. I'm fairly sure he never became president.

Rafael, who is no world beater himself, was surely a better option than Maicon in the squad even? Thought Lucas Leiva may have deserved a spot also. Pato, feels like he has been around for ages but is only 24, surely he was a better option than either Fred or Jo?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,636 ✭✭✭feargale

Brazil should look at the bright side. They almost won the second half, going down 2 - 1. You're only as good ( or as bad ) as your last half. :D

Not bringing Moura was a surprise and probably a mistake in hindsight.

Its a pity Columbia didn't beat Brazil - would have made for a far better semi. Brazil were never going to beat Germany without Silva and Neymer. Though the scale of the shamble did surprise me. Actually felt sorry for Fred in the end....looks more like a porn star than a footballer, which may be a more rewarding career for him after tonight.

I think the English media like to knock Wenger at times and if his record signing failed to be a success, they could beat him with that stick.
'Can't sign big money signings and his isn't uncovering as many cheap gems, Wenger out, too many foreigners at Arsenal, needs more Wiltshire type players.' Would sell a lot of their papers.

Or maybe I'm talking shoite, I am a sap like.

If this was any other world cup on different soil where Brazil calmed their expectations even slightly and they hadn't been absolutely hammered in the semi-final, it could be considered a good run for the squad at their disposal but all the hipe really added the fuel.

Stop listening to pundits so much and actually look at the match yourself. He has been as good as Thiago Silva in this tournament who is the best defender in the world

Not my finest moment but in fairness I can't tell the future

I think the criticism of Ozil has been quite fair. I hate when criticism of a player like Ozil is typically followed by 'he's an easy target' etc etc. I don't think he's had a great world cup at all, he played well tonight but was probably the 3rd or 4th most influential midfielder on the team. The way he plays he should be 1st consistently.

I was surprised when Real sold him but having Real a lot over the past few years, I could understand why. Modric surpassed him as a 90 minute player last season, he was the player that Ozil could not consistently be for Real. Ozil's stats at Real were impressive of course, but his influence tended to get stuck in the mud around the 70th minute mark in games, his substitution stats show that.

Ozil is a terrific player, but I think if he pushed himself more he could be an even better player and not need to answer criticism, which a lot of the time, is deserved.
